Surge Protector
Thanks Ozz, I did one of your mods and it paid off. Had a bad storm here at the camp ground and the pole outside got struck. When I looked in the front of my unit I saw that the red light on my Intermatic surge protector was on. It took the hit and nothing was damaged. Now I have to get a new one and replace it.

Dennis I am trying to plan a trip out west and I think I am going to have to get one of some type. I have never had a problem but I hear storys about CGs and I am beginning to get concerned. I saw the small one Ozz posted and I am looking at it. Just some protection would be great.

Dennis, your protector just paid for itself. I figure that what I spent on my power protection is a LOT cheaper than frying all my electronics or worse yet, DW and I. It's my opinion that our Montys should have a HW-50C as a STANDARD item in EVERY Montana that is sold from the factory. I know it would have been an influencer for me and would set it apart from the "herd".

Glad it worked out for you Dennis. I have replaced mine at the house and on the Montan because of power surges, lightning I think. Good protection for a hunnert bucks!

Yes Ozz, that was a good investment. The only thing damaged was my back when I jumped after it struck that pole outside the Montana.

For those of you that had to replace the surge protector - Did you still have electricity in the unit at that point. Just wondering if we would have to wire around the bad protector to get juice????
Thanks.

Tom,
When I thought mine had failed I removed it in about 30 mins. Removed means running wires back the original way without it.
My current configuration is set up to plug in a auto-former if needed so I can bypass the surge guard if needed with relocation of one 50 amp plug. Exact same style as on the pedestal.

To clarify we are talking about two entirely different types of surge protection. Dennis and I have a wire-in piggy-back system. When it self-destructs, you have no problem getting power. The wiring connects to the double pole breaker.

Al, I don't know. First the house and now it is after the Montana. However being everything we own now is in the Montana it won't be much to loose. Having said that we don't want to get a new Montana that way. The two of you left Kansas just in time to miss the storms.

Dennis, We are just glad everything is ok, and the surge protector worked. And yes, we are very glad we left when we did!

I just ordered one on eBay for $310 and thought it was a pretty good deal. You all put the fear of... in me so I also think better safe than sorry. It is Surge Guard™ 50A Portable Model 34750. Thanks all.
