hope I didnt mess up to bad
Hello all,
Ok here is the facts, I was washing all the critters off the front of the trailer(2013 3100rl) used Maguire's gold car wash did a fine job and as I was cleaning .I thought you know I need to wash the roof we traveled 6200 miles
and getting ready to put away so I started cleaning the roof with the same thing as it was still in the bucket. and I kind of went crazy and cleaned the whole roof .Now I know it is epdm roof and should be coated every year but worried I might of used the wrong product for cleaning I know I should use blue dawn dish soap, the gold car wash does not use petroleum distillates so I don't know if it is ok to use. so any help would be appreciated as I just kind of got carried away ,it all looks ok but don't want have it swell up or break down

Don't know about that particular product, but hopefully it will be ok. You should know that at a past National Rally the makers of the roof said that not only should it NOT be coated every year, but it also shouldn't be washed. If you do feel you have to wash it, they said, then use blue dawn.

Agree with Dick. You should not have a problem based on what you used. Get up and inspect your roof several times a year and then just let the rain wash it off.

If I did it and was worried about it, I would rewash the roof with Dawn.

Car wash soap is very mild, I use it as a starting point for cleaning everything, my wife washes the hardwood floors with it. Think of all the materials in cars, has to be very neutral so it doesn't react badly. We even use turtle wax dry & wax in the house & campers with great results.

I hope I'm not messing up my roof but they sold me some roof cleaner and conditioner at camping world and told me I had to use it to make the material last. I clean it once a year before going into storage.

I try not to go on the roof. Mine is a older unit 03. I don't wash the roof on my house and it's best not to go up there if you don't need to.

If we are not supposed to wash the roof , why are products made to do this? My older unit came with instructions to wash with Dawn Concentrate not the scented dish washing liquid.
I wash mine at least twice a year and it has not caused any problem that i can see. Maybe the newer EPDM is different from the older EPDM?

A lot of the newer roofs are TPO, a thermo plastic material.

One thing you might wanna note is that dawn will strip most or all of your wax and polish off your sides on the way down.

They make the products to make money, same reason cw sells them. Washing the roof is one of those personal things. I only do it if extremely bored.

I washed mine yesterday before closing it up for the winter. It is surprising how much dirt and grime accumulate on it. The front attic vent had a deposit of black road grime around it that washed off easily. Also, I give a good cleaning to the rain gutters. This in combination of a roof wash helps keep the black streaks to a minimum.

You DO NOT have to seal your roof every year.
as for the product you used, you'll have to just wait and see what happens.

we live in humid, hot FL. Monte is stored outside, the roof gets green algae on it. Once a year I clean the roof with Protect All Cleaner, the next day I use Protect All Roof Treatment which has a UV protectant. There are several similar products out there.
