We are leaving for the Quartzsite gathering this Sun 1/13. We will be departing from Silverdale, WA. With all the bad weather in No Cal and over the passes in So Or., we are thinking of bypassing I-5 at Grants Pass and take 199 to 101 then take 299 to to Redding and catching I-5 from there. I would like any info on this route especially highway 299. Or possibly go further down and catch 20 over to I-5

We have over 299 many times and it is beautiful drive in the summer. It is mostly a 2 lane road with passing lanes. You could encounter snow at some of the higher elevations, like by Weaverville. You also have to go through the Eureka area and almost all storms seem to come on shore there. The last section of 299 in the mountains before you get to Redding is is very, very curvy, slow, downhill road for about 13 miles, many 15 MPH curves. I think you would be better off trying to travel on I-5 between storm, a much better road.

Nailbender..... We have to agree with you 110%. I-5 is a much better choice with or without a Monty in tow.

We are leaving for Yuma on the 14th and if this weather persists I will head for the coast but I would go further south before heading inland. I have been on 299 to Redding before and there is no way I would go over that route now.It has some pretty stiff climbs also.

We came down Hwy 101 a week ago. Left I-5 just south of Eugene, Across Hwy 38 to Reedsport, that is a pretty good Hwy. We just stayed on 101, because we have lots of time and many more places to stop & visit. We are now in Pismo Beach after brunting the storms that hit San Francisco last Friday & Saturday. A few years ago I used 20 to cross from I-5 to 101 heading north. At that time it was a pretty good Hwy too. 4 days ago when we came down 101 & going up in the hills, south of Eureka there were signs of snow on the side of the roads. Being from British Columbia, We just don't except to see snow on the California Coast Hwy, 100 miles south of the Oregon border. But in most cases it has being a good trip.

Go south on 101 to Ventura and take 126 over to I5 just north of Los Angeles. A very good road and you miss most of the grapevine. Then take 210East to 15 or 215 and drop down to I 10. You don't get down into the worst of LA traffic.

Thanks ever one for the great information. Looks like we will go down I-5 through Grants Pass and Redding. We will wait for the passes to clear at the Seven Feathers Casino in OR before heading south. Looks like the weather in northern Calf area for next week is looking better.
