Generator Problem

What the heck are they thinking when they install these things, are they robots?

Ozz, I am like you I don't know what they are thinking when installing some of this stuff. The starter lead going to the battery and the gas line were run through a hole in the metal without a grommet. That sure was a big problem waiting to happen. You can bet it is installed right now.

They just want to get the job completed without any extra work or thinking.

There is a pre-cut knock-out panel that makes up the floor of the front storage compartment. I'm sure these guys just assume the panel is designed to except all gensets. Appearently the foot print of the Onan is bigger then what the knock-out was designed for, and if the person installing the genset doesn't measure and just assumes it's correct, then you will have the overheating problem. If this site was friendly in excepting photos I'd post a picture of the mod that took care of my problem.

I finished the generator yesterday and below are some pictures showing the before, the fix and the after. We are leaving for Louisiana today and I will get to give it a good test to see if the mod worked. Sure am glad I am able to fix most things. Keystone and Onan are still pointing fingers. The 45 degree bend in the metal does a good job of deflecting the hot air. Had the bottom been cut to the proper size to start with, I may not have had as much problem as I did.

The mod I made worked great. Just got back from a 1700 mile trip where the weather was hot and not one sputter. I looked at a new Montana down in Louisiana with the factory added generator and it had a divider added between the exhaust hot air and the return air intake. It was the smaller 5500 unit therefore they must have had problems with them also. I like my mod better because it deflects the hot air to the side getting it out from under the unit.
