Pin Box Contacts Truck Bed on Tight Turns
When I turn sharply the rear of the pin box will make contact with the top of the truck bed.
The rear of the pinbox has already been cut on an angle so I'm thinking of cutting it more. This would be very near the bottom hole that would be used if the pin would be lowered.
Has anyone else have this problem and how did you solve it?

The quick reply is that this problem has been posted in the past and one solution was to cut the box like you mention, but you can only imagine that there would be a concern about cutting too much or at the wrong angle to not compromise strength.
Another solution is to raise the aspect of the pin and there are many ways to do this if available. What is the current distance of the overhang and truck bed rails when you are straight and how much needs to cut from the pin box to clear the truck bed rails on a turn? You might even consider a new pin box of a different size or raise your hitch head height if possible. Just keep the trailer in tow aspect as level as
possible.

I tried to do a search on this topic including the archives and turned up nothing so that is what led me to post this question.
I have raised my hitch up already and am travelling in a slightly nose up position. I need about an 1 1/2 inchs more height of the pin box to have clearance when turning.

I have a similar set up with no problem. What is your clearance bed rails to 5er? What pin box do you have?

Lenny, I had the same issue with my 2012 3455 with the Mor/Ryde long hitch. I did trim my pin box down very close to the bottom hole as you stated. This did resolve the problem and has not created any unforeseen issues.

I have only a 5 inch clearance that is with a bit of a nose up. The pin box is a Mor Ryde. Not much I can do to get a higher clearance either and I'm not willing to get rid of the pin box.

Don't have many other choices but to cut the back of the pin box. Can't cut enough off the bottom to help.

What hitch do you have? Does the mfg offer a way to shim the base. I have a 2" shim on mine which gives me 7 " of clearance. But my trailer was raise 3" to level the trailer when mor ryde installed the IS suspension.

I have a Hijacker hitch. I can raise my hitch higher but that would make me travel with the nose pretty high. That is why I'm having this problem.

The part that gets trimmed is not the pin box, but actually part of the frame that the pin box bolts to. I trimmed ours a while back, and have not made contact with the edge of the bed since. I relocated the frame serial number tag, and moved the breakaway switch wiring to a different hole.

Thanks Bob. That was exactly the cut I was planning on doing. Thanks for the pictures to confirm it. I was thinking of using a reciprocating saw. What did you use?

I have the same truck, although newer with a MorRyde and B&W Patriot hitch. I tried 5" clearance when I bought the truck, but the front of the trailer cap would contact the bed if I had to turn into a slight downhill incline. I think you need a minimum of 6" unless you can always keep the truck and trailer on pretty level ground. I am a little nose high, but my dealer says it's not enough to cause a problem. I never had the Mor Ryde come close to hitting the bed.

I agree that 5 inches is pretty tight but raising my hitch I would be another 1 1/2 inches higher at the pin. I'm thinking that would be too high.

Well the frame is cut, wire rerouted, serial number relocated and where the frame was cut it is painted. Thanks to everyone for their input and especially to Bob.

Glad you got it done. I used a 4 1/2" grinder with a thin metal cutting abrasive blade. It minimized the amount of filing needed to clean up the cut. All this could have been avoided if the pin box was 2 inches shorter.

I have a question for Morryde owners.
My Morryde hitch is a long nose model. From the front edge of the hitch to the back end the hitch is about 1-1.5" nose high. It does not sit perfectly flat on the hitch table but is at a slight incline up in the front.
The pin box on the Montana is also tipped to the rear so the hitch mounts in the nose high position.
As a result the back of the morryde sits about an inch lower than the top of the rails of the truck.
I have checked the the welds on the pin box and I have checked for any up and down play when I lower it on the truck and take it off and there does not seem to be any.
Any ideas?
Does your morryde sit perfectly level or is it a little nose high?
Brian

My pin box was angled quite severely last year, and when the frame broke, the mobile RV repair/welder guy also checked the frame where the pin box attaches, and found quite a few welds failed. So, in addition to repairing the broken frame, he also spent over a hour welding the frame above the pin box. We had to unbolt and drop the pin box to make these repairs. The pin box rides much closer to level now. This is a photo of Troy welding the area above the pin box. http://troydevault.weebly.com/

That is so sad. I just bought our used 2955rl last week. It was only used 5 times by the PO. And then to resorts. I just don't understand how the pinbox could be damaged so soon. It has sat under a cover for years, the graphics and paint look like new.
I guess I need to open up the front around the inbox and see what's up.
Also your link to the picture does not show your repair.
