Sure - it might be cheaper to just buy a bag of ice and a cooler, but then the ice would just be made with.............water !

Back to ice bags.

Broken parts and it did it all by itself without help from me.




Looks like 2008 is not starting out on the brighter, righter, luckier side for me.

Well, i guess on the bright side, I'm $184 with taxes richer.

If cheaper was better than I would not have a camper anyway, would be cheaper to stay in hotel in long run.So I Will keep our Magic Chef it works great, got at Home depot for $139.00.

Clean the parts with alcohol, super glue them, then use an epoxy to cover the cracks, I bet it will hold.
My half time oven door button, is now better than the original was.

Well, DW says it's bagged ice. We did purchase one of those Coleman 5 or 7 day coolers. It really works. I'll by two 10# bags of ice. Open one and spread it around on the "cool ones," and put the other on top unopened. We just fill the Dometic freezer with a baggie of ice once in a while and only have to refill the cooler once a week.

Hey! Her choice, and I got to keep $100 of the cash back. Good deal for me!!! :-)

She was shopping around on the Internet and mentioned several different models including a stainless steel ice maker, so maybe it's not over just quite yet.

Broome101, you got a heck of a deal there. How long do you have to crank it before it turns to ice? :-)

I had really given the "super glue," consideration, including "hot glue gun." However, with my luck the other side would have broken and then something else. Just didn't feel it was worth the effort. Had it on the counter for 2 hours and 30 minutes, and it made 1/2 gallon zip bag of ice. DW said the the ice was so porous that it would not last in a a glass of tea, let alone a martini.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with these machines guys (must be made by Mission). Ours has worked great (knock on wood)!

Mine was green tagged "$99-last in stock" at Home Depot last fall when they started cleaning out for winter inventory.

Remember these do not have refrigeration, so you need let the first batches of ice cool down the interior before they start to make hardy ice. The first few batches are throw out little mutants. Once the basket fills the first time, ours produces at least one batch of large cubes every ten minutes. I quickly run out of space in the freezer to store the ice after 4 or 5 hours so I just let it fill up and use it from there.

I'm an ice chewer, and after watching the news story on that kids science project last year where she found more bacteria in the McDonald's ice machine than in their toilet, I save the bagged ice for non-consuming uses .

No ice maker here. I just have the Margarita machine. So I think I will take Brad with me and let him make the ice. Seems like a fair trade to me margaritas for ice. HMMMM are you ready Brad?

You did get the 12V version of that Margaritaville so it will run in that new boat of yours didn't you?

Waymen, Got mine at Home Depot winter of 2006 just like Brad said cleaning out the fall stuff, was last one they had. Was listed at 139.00 but once I got to the store it was gone so had to go 20 miles down road to get one that they saved till I got there, told manager had to drive to get it they gave me another 10% discount. Worked just like Brad said, keeps us in ice all summer long never have to buy bag ice unless making homemade ice cream.

Waynem, thanks for taking the time to explain.
A note for you folks; I took care of commercial refrigeration for bars and restaurants.
I would rather poke toothpicks in my eye's than drink a iced down glass when eating out. I would say that 90% of the ice machines I worked on, had black slime and gobs of crud in the ice made, and on the evaporators. The only machines that were safe, were the ones that had a monthly cleaning and a good P.M.
Even then, the cleaning of an ice machine uses a mild acid and cleaning compound that requires the mechanic to waste the entire bin full of ice. No one does that. OK, almost no one.
But your RV machine will be good.... If you clean it regularly. correctly. I won't get one, too much bacteria.

I understand what you are saying, but at least I know what water and what state of cleanliness the ice from our ice maker is being made from. Purchasing bagged ice would be a different matter based on what you are saying. Are there health department inspections for commercial ice makers?? Just curious. Now I will have to do some research on the cleaning of these portable units. Seems like it had something to do with vinegar??? Anybody know??

Bingo, cleaning means dis-infecting, I would insure that any method would consist of a germ killing agent.
Health department inspections can be 30-60-even 90 days apart, and that inspection may be a good one, or a walk through. Seldom do they pull the cover on an ice machine and check it out. Only the top 10% I would guess. (Based on my life's experiences)
I would say that bagged ice would be 75% cleaner than the other type. On average.
Goggle Johnstone supply co. Check out their Ice Machine cleaner. Virginia is one brand.
