Proper operating temperatures for Ford 6.7

I tow with a 2016 F350 with the 6.7 diesel. When towing I watch the engine oil temperature running at about 205 - 215 degrees and the transmission running about 10 degrees lower.
I used to have a 2008 F350 with the 6.4 diesel. That truck ran about 185 - 190 engine temp and 170 - 180 trans temp under the same conditions.
For those of you who have the 6.7 diesel....are these temps about average for this vehicle? Or is mine running a little hotter than it should?
I'd appreciate any info on this. I know high temps can kill the transmission very quickly and over heating the engine is not good either.

KT,

Your transmission temp should not get much above 200. My engine oil will run around 200-210 on a level road. Going up a long step grade using a lot of boost oil temps 230-240 are the norm.

If you stop with oil temp high, let it idle for a couple of minutes to get temp down around 200 before shutting down the engine.

The new oil Ford is using in their transmissions can stand higher temperatures before it starts to break down. You are OK.

Yep what Lynwood said. I read in the O&M that I don’t have to Change the trans fluid till 150,000 miles. It’s going in tomorrow for an oil change, fuel filters and radiator coolant flush. It’s got 55,000 miles on it.

Quick question, do I need to flush the secondary system as well as the primary?

Wayne I can’t answer your question.
Be sure make that positive they use the right antifreeze in your truck. Your Diesel engine can be ruined with the wrong antifreeze.

You dont have to do the cooling systems yet. You need to have it tested for PH and they do that at the dealer. When the PH goes bad they add something to the cooling system to bring back the PH. As for doing the secondary cooling system by all means do both. You don't need to flush yet. Oil change and fuel filters are always good. You don't have to change the fuel filters every oil change. You can go 20,000 miles on fuel filters.

Linwood and Slow Hand.

Thanks guys. The book says to flush at 60,000 miles but I will take your advice and have them check the PH and go from there. The change oil and Change fuel filters indicator is on so both need changing.

Linwood. I always take my baby to the Ford dealership for service. But I did not know about the proper antifreeze I will be sure to question them on that.

Again thanks for the great guidance.

Wayne all Diesel engines have cavitation. The cylinders vibrate and cause ail bubbles on the outside of then they eat holes through the cylinders if you don’t use the proper antifreeze. The 7.3 Fords were the worst but all Diesel engines will do it. That is the reason for the proper antifreeze.

Make sure if they tell you it is out of range on the PH that they are using the correct test strips!! Several techs have been busted for using the strips for VC-8 which is for a 6.4L and not the strips for the VC-12 which is for the 6.7L.

............
I recently had mine done at 60,000 per the manual. I didn’t know there were different colored antifreezes for different diesels until I started looking into it.

I let my dealer do all my service and tend to follow the manual fairly closely even though the dealer sometimes wanted to do some things earlier than the manual calls for. Had a talk with the service manager about that and they no longer do that. But all service is done on schedule and by the dealer in case there is ever any question about things being maintained properly. And I don’t crawl around under them as easily as I used to.

Well I am home and $700 dollars lighter. But I got everything done plus a new air filter and a new A10 GPS card. They did check the PH and I did need the flush. Also they said I could use one battery but that I will do myself and just replace both of them.

So i am set for my Canada trip in the fall. But I will change the batteries before we leave as I don’t want them to let me down in the middle of nowhere.

Again thanks for the advice and guidance.

Hi KT -

Just thought I would put my .02 in. I have a 2017 F-350 and my numbers run almost identical to yours. I have 45,000 on the truck and have watched the numbers from the day I bought it new. They remain steady. Every 3-4 years I get a new truck. Trucks in the past definitely had higher temps when towing (as do the new ones). I have never had a problem, doubt you will.
Happy camping!

For the future, the dealer costs on the GPS map updates are offensive. eBay is your friend here. $30 or so instead of the $100+ the dealer charges. Same data, same versions.

I had a 2016 F350 and my engine and transmission temps would go above 220 and the fan would hardly ever come on. Now i have a 2018 F350 6.7 Diesel and this one runs even hotter. I've seen temps in the 230-235:range and the fan comes on more often. I have both guages on display .one just says normal and the other tells me actual temps

Hi everyone:
We haul our Montana 2013 3800RE with a 2011 Ford F350 Super Duty, SRW with the 6.7 engine. Temperatures rarely exceed 215 and transmission is usually 15 degrees lower.Average temp about 200 F. Most elevation change was between Phoenix and Flagstaff ( aprox. 5000 ft ) or Sacramento to Reno ( 4500 ft ) or that short haul from Las Vegas to Pahrump. (PS. If you hauled that you know what I mean.) The 6.7 diesel has never overheated but I do not push it. That is unlike my previous 2005 F350 Super Duty with the 6.0 diesel.

)lMake sure to clean out the bugs and dirt out of the radiator fins ,ac find and etc The newer trucks run warmer for keeping emissions lower.
