WINE RACK UNDER FRIDGE - Montana Owners Club

Okay, I have been thinking about how to make a wine rack for the space under the refrigerator and this is what I came up with. I can get 7 bottles of wine in the rack. The front and back pieces are made out of 3/8” plywood. The back piece is 33 5/8”W x 4 1/8”H and the front is 33 5/8”W x 1 5/8”H (your width dimensions might be different depending on how wide your space is under the fridge). The holes for the necks of the bottles were made with a 1 1/2” hole saw and are 4 1/2” on center and centered 1 1/2” up from the bottom. The stringers are 3/4” x 1 3/4” batting strips cut to 10 1/4” long and are centered between the holes (I figure this should keep the bottles from banging into each other during transit). Everything was then glued and screwed for strength. I painted the entire rack black and then screwed it in place under the fridge. Nice Indeed!! The creativity and originality of the members of the MOC never ceases to amaze me. I have been wanting to come up with an original use of that space for a time now. You have inspired me to check if that opening will allow 2 liter soda bottles in, as we don't drink alcohol, but the 2 liter bottles that are constantly in the way in the kitchen floor may be on their way under the fridge if they will fit. Thanks for the inspiration!!

That is an excellent job well done!
The only problem I have is that on our camper there isn’t enough room for that. We only have about 4 inches or so of clearance. How much room did you have to work with on that?

The opening behind the panel is 4 1/4"H x 32 3/4"W and in the compartment itself, from the carpet to the bottom to the plywood under the fridge is 7 1/4" tall. I'm sure you could get away with making the piece that holds the neck of the bottles as little as 3" in height. As long as you can get a bottle of wine through the opening, it should work

We opened the area under the fridge for more cooking pans, etc. but had to cut the bottom rail in half and then re-install so there was enough opening to actually get the pans, etc. in to the area. Jack, we really like your wine implementation. Nice job!

Such a nice job Jack! We may have to move the cooking pans that we currently store there as by the look of your pics it was meant to be for wine storage.

Nice job Jack. We store our vacuum hose under the Fridge. It is fun to see how many different ideas there are for the same space. Love seeing all the innovation MOCers come up with. Enjoy the wine!

Does the refrig throw off any heat to that area? My thought is that it might be pretty warm under there - right/wrong?

Great question and something I hadn't thought of...to be honest I have not checked that yet

I will add it to my things to check and let you know. Ours may be different than others because Keystone recently switched to Norcold refrigerators (which ours is). I will try it both on gas and electric. Thanks for the question.

I took one of the hinges off one of those fold out drawer fronts under the kitchen sink and noticed they were spring loaded and hold themselves closed. I took the hinge to Home Depot and matched it with the current hardware and also got the self closing type hinge (2). I did not put a latch on the panel because there is a lip that will not allow the wine bottles to hit the inside of the door and the hinges do a good job of keeping it closed. I could not find a drawer pull that matched the rest of the cabinet hardware, so I just went with a knob that has the same finish. I really didn't need the knob to open the door and you may not either, it was just my preference to put one on.
