I use the Elec contact cleaner spray from radio shack and a nylon brush, no sparks as of yet

Good suggestions above. I've also used fine (400) sandpaper to polish the contacts.

And when it is all clean, get some electrical conductive silicone and dab each connector and slip them together a few times to distribute. Use the same silicone on the 50amp male connector.
