Gas can safety

I just bought a Yamaha 2400 generator and put it in the bed of the truck behind the cab. It holds 1.6 gallons of gas which I assume you can fill and drive around safely. But I have a 2 gallon gas can and wonder where is a safe place to carry it? thanks Nick

I believe the safest place is still in the bed of the truck so it can vent. Secure it, and allow for expansion in the heat by not filling it up to the neck. If you have a black bedliner, I wouldn't fill it beyond 3/4 for gasoline.

Be careful with the static issue when filling (static buildup in plastic cans from plastic bed liner discharges to nozzle as you bring the nozzle close, and ignites the fuel vapors). If you have a plastic bedliner, always remove the can or generator and fill it on the ground.

As Brad says, the bed of the truck is probably the best place. That's where we carry ours. I have two 2-gallon containers that I fill when we know we're going to dry camp for a period of time. Normally I probably have one to one and a half gallons carried in the back. Have done this for over six years. No problems yet.

We carry ours in the bed of the truck. We do not carry the generator in the truck. It is in the front basement.

When filling the tank(s) always take them out of the bed of the truck. Place them on the ground to fill. We carry one or two tanks depending on what our plans are. For the past 3 years I have not locked the can in the bed but considering the increase of fuel I will probably put a lock of some sort on them.

I cable lock both our Kipor 3000ti and the 5 gal plastic gas can to the bed of the truck - with the same cable. Works great.

Ditto Dsprik with the locking cable. And bad as it may be, I am definitely not taking that 160 pound beast out of the truck every time I have to put gas it in. I do set the gas can on wooden blocks in the bed which I use to keep the generator from moving around in the truck bed.
