Storage - What do I need to know?
Greetings All,
We are now permanently settled in Aiken, SC. We are storing the Monty at my son's house while preparing the rig for sale. I will be winterizing the rig this weekend. What else do I need to pay attention to while in storage?
Should the slides stay opened or closed? The water will be off and only minimal power on - to keep the batteries charged. The hot water heater has been drained.
What else?
Don

your batteries should last for a number of months without being charged, just disconnect the negative wires.
keep slides in.
that's about it.

Check it often for signs of mice if you are anywhere they frequent. We check ours every two or three days as it's in the woods.

There actually is a bit more to do when storing your RV.
Flush out all water including fresh, gray and black tanks and water heater.
Winterize.
Remove all food.
Remove anything that can freeze.
Prop open fridge and freezer doors to prevent mold.
Slightly open two roof vents for ventilation.
Close slides.
Disconnect batteries (remove one negative cable) or remove batteries.
Turn off the gas.
Cover if desired.

Thanks. We have done most of this. I will be winterizing this weekend and having all the carpets steam-cleaned. I will close the slides when finished doing a little cleanup inside. Is there any reason to disconnect the batteries if I am going to stay plugged in to 30 amp?

If connected to power in storage, you don’t need to disconnect the batteries. Just make sure they are topped off with distilled water.

Water Heater
You mentioned you drained the water heater. I'm sure you made sure ithe electric on-off switch was turned off before you drained it. An empty tank with power on will kill the heater element right away. I learned the hard way one spring.

Yes, of course. Turned the power off to the WH prior to any work. Thanks for the reply.

I would suggest that you set the heat pump to keep the temp around 60 degrees. The Aiken SC area has a high humidity even in the winter. It may help keep the humidity levels lower which will slow down any mold issues.

Thanks! We have a large dehumidifier running and empty it once a week.

I never open the vents. That way no extra moisture can get into my RV. I live in Norcal where it rains all winter and sure i could open the vents a little but I just dont want that moist air to get in my RV. After winter is over here I open her up and she smells as fresh as a daisy. i keep 5 gallons of water in my black tank with one of those orange things in the tank. If it freezes it shouldn't hurt the tank. If you get freezing weather for long periods of time I would get some fresh water antifreeze and pump that into all the lines. Bypass the water heater because it's drained already.
