Truck receiver mounted stone/rock/dirt protectors
I'd like to buy a receiver mounted stone/rock/dirt protector that goes on to the receiver of the truck, and protects the front of the monty from rock chips, tar, etc.
I'd greatly appreciate input on which models/brands work best, and are easy putting on and taking off.
Thank you

These are the ones I like (on my shopping list). Solid, full coverage and still allows the hitch ball to be used. I especially like that it's removable.

I know someone who has the split solid type shown in the link above and they were happy with them. I have also seen the baleen style on other trucks and I'm not sure I like the type because these show the lower parts of the brushes worn off and/or looking like a bad hairdo (the brushes in all directions), but these have been probably been used on lots of gravel or hard-packed roads to look like this, and it is probably doing its job to some degree - imagine the debris that caused this instead hitting your towable. I think the solid material is probably more durable but hopefully someone can help make the comparison of the solid or brush style.
I haven't purchased them because we don't venture out like we used to and this item is no longer a high priority.

John,
Was the stone/dirt guard attached to your 2" hitch receiver, or was it attached to your rear bumper?

It slide over the 2" part of the ball assembly that went into the 2" hitch receiver.
I had the Road Wing.
It did rotate a little on the 2" receiver. I would not use them again.

In my case with our 08 Chevy Duramax I would not mount anything behind the exhaust. Last year our exhaust got hot enough that it melted the front molding on the front of the Monty. I went to a shop and had that long tapered exhaust tip replaced with a vented stainless steel tip angled more to the side. No problems so far.
So do be aware of how hot it can get behind the exhaust tip.

I have Rock Tamers on our truck (they mount to the hitch) and mud flaps. I made the mud flaps myself from one large semi truck flap. Between the two systems, they have kept the front of the trailer pretty free of issues. For pictures, follow the link below in my signature titled "Truck Mods". BTW: the cheapest place I found the Rock Tamers was at Cabela's but I don't know if they still carry them or not. Price was $217.84 including shipping in 2007.

I have had better luck with traditional mudflaps directly behind the wheels

I also side with the traditional mudflap crowd. If you get a mudflap that is long enough to reach say to within no more than 6" above the road surface and a good anti-sail bracket, you'll have little issue with chips on the front of your fiver. If you get a flap that only goes down about half way on your tire or you don't use an anti-sail bracket with a longer flap, you're not covering much of the exit area of rocks and other debris from your tires. Take a look at most over the road trucks and you'll see what I'm talking about.

My husband (Hobobob) purchased from a friend, ours by Rock Solid. Have used it for 3 years now! No problems. It may show in our picture in the signature below.
