I'm having a hard time figuring how the license plates were any advantage to the thief - they should be the opposite. If I were to steal a rig and thought anybody suspected I was up to no good, the FIRST thing that would go out to the police would be the license plate number. Even if I wasn't sure, I wouldn't want THAT plate on there. I would have my own.
I'm just guessing the license plate was the first thing that hit the ditch on the way.
I think removing the plate is a little over-reactive, and probably a waste of time. If anything, you're plate would help if a suspicious bystander happen to call it in. At least it would give the police a place to start, and an owner to call. Without it, it's just another Montana rolling off the lot or out of the storage area.

Brad -
The plates would keep them on the road long enough to get to where they could ditch them and put their own on - the theft occured on last Friday night - who knows what time and was not discovered until the dealership re-opened on saturday morning -

Like all the others we are sorry this happened but glad the dealer is stepping up. I agree the plates stayed on as long as they thought it safe - getting to the border before morning would be easy. When we took the Monty down to Mexico we didn't have to show any paperwork proving ownership. But it is probably being used for a nice hunting camp.
Good luck on getting your new Monty.

An aside to bsmeaton: Towing a large 5er with no tags or "In Transit" banner is a direct invitation to a blue light special. Having the tags on, you are just another happy camper off to see the world in the eyes of the police you pass.

I guess we can agree to disagree. I will leave my plate on for the off chance someone will report the suspicious activity as soon as it happens, such as the storage lot keeper. I want my plate number on the hot sheet as soon as possible, at least before the thief puts his own plate on there.
A hitch pin lock goes a long way as a deterrent as well! Also, if you use the spreadable wheel chocks, they can be padlocked.

We had our 5th wheel Colorado license plates stolen while parked at my uncle's in small town in MO. Several years ago. Not the Montana but a Dutchman we owned. Anyway we were on vacation and stopped at a highway patrol station and got some paperwork if we ever got stopped. We NEVER got stopped anywhere, nor on the way back to Colorado. We had no plates on it during vacation, through Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado to home. I think the plates were stolen to use on another vehicle or trailer. That is what the Highway patrol said . So I don't think it would have done any good to take the plates off.

i am just now reading the forum the first itme in a month. Isn't it amazing what someone will steal? At least your personal things weren't in it--just think the guy that took it thought "this is really nice", bet he was surprised to see there was nothing in it when he went inside, The look on his face could have been priceless. Hope that you get yours back or better yet a new one with the upgrades. Keep us posted.

Seems the holidays have put a crimp in anything being done - have received a letter from their insurance company asking us to sign off on the title and don't date it - HAH!!! LIKE THAT WOULD EVER HAPPEN!

It might be interesting to send that letter to the state insurance commission to see what they thought of it. Sounds like back door stuff to me. Back dating documents is illegal almost anywhere I have been. In fact, it sounds fraudulant. Fraud is what brought Enron down.

Our dealer was very surprised to hear they wanted us to sign off on the title - he said, "Don't do it - we'll take care of that when we get you the new rig." He has started looking now and will let us know what he can find -

Plates on a rig means there might be some easily fenceable items inside and maybe some cash, firearms, personal electronics, etc. If the thief wanted only the rig, then they might prefer a new one without plates. If they want the goodies inside, then the plates would be the key. When ours is at the dealer it contains four laptops and all our other things since we have no place else to put them during that time.

Have you hired an armed guard to sleep under the trailer until you pick it up?
I'm available - lol.

Not a bad idea, Longwell! All of our neighbors have said they are going to go park their old cars over on our dealer's lot - to be sure, tho, our dealer is a "peach" and is as upset about the theft as we are!
