The Great Escape!

Howdy All!




Well, we just spent our first night in a Walmart parking lot! The last night of our stay in Gettysburg was a wash-out - literally! Gettysburg Campground is on the Marsh Creek and rains began a day earlier. The campground staff came around earlier in the evening and told us (and everyone else) that there was a possibility that we would need to evacuate the park. We went ahead and prepared to leave (we were headed out the next morning anyway), so we were ready to go. Sure enough, about 10:30 p.m. the knock on the door came and of course the rain began pounding. Breaking down in pouring rain is not fun! We were ready, however, and only had to unplug and hook up. Other's in the campground were not as prepared. DW went around helping others in distress. One couple ask her to help with the jacks - they could not get them to retract. The guy next to us ended up tearing his awning off his travel trailer when the awning collapsed. Another couple backed into a tree (hit HARD).



We took our time (yes, in the pouring rain and rising water) and went through our check list. DW walked in almost knee deep water in front of the truck with an emergency light and led me out of the campground safely (lots of trees and could not see the roads for the flowing water).



We drove to Waynesboro and called Walmart. The assistant manager was wonderful and told us we were totally welcome to stay in the parking lot; she even ask if there was anything we needed that they could have ready when we arrived.



We are now in Williamsburg, VA for a few nights and will head out toward Key Largo on Thursday.



All safe and sound, but a little more experienced than before.


It's all about the journey! LOL!

You can always laugh about those later. And makes for good campfire stories.

Only unplanned stay so far was when we had to evacuate an RV park due to a forest fire. But had to spend the first night in a hotel due to no local RV sites available and too hot to stay in the trailer. Got to get a generator just in case.

Glad that you were one to react early. Our next time to gettysburg will be the park a little further north than artillery ridge, off east side of 15. Wish I could remember the name now.

We stayed a wet week at Gettysburg CG last fall but for sure didn't encounter what you just went through. Glad you made it out safely.


We have evacuated twice from flooding CGs. Once at a KOA on the Susquehanna River in NYs Southern Tier where the manager said that there had never been a flood and a second time in VT in a CG on the Battenkill River. We were on relatively high ground so helped other pull their RVs out with my 4x4 truck beore we had to get out too

The real highlight of our trip to that area was 1). The train ride over in Strasburg, PA through the Dutch country https://www.strasburgrailroad.com/. Well worth the drive over and 2). We drove over to the VFW Post 8896 in East Berlin to listen to David C. Taylor - a Vietnam War BBC News Correspondent and movie director talk about the CIA's involvement in communicating with the POWs in Hanoi Hilton.



So, certainly not a total wash out.

I'll take the flooding over a forest fire any day!

If your wife was in knee deep water then you might want to check your wheel bearings on your rv. You might want to also check your fluids in your truck also. I went in about 2 feet of water in my Ram when we had hurricane Harvey and got water in the front diff. Glad you and wife got out safely.
