Estes Park, Glenwood Springs, Gunnison, Durango
I know I have seen post recommending campgrounds in these 4 area's but the search function has not returned the desired results. Will be visiting these area's in September and would like recommendations. Full hook ups are desireable, water and electric required. Thanks for any help. Jim

Hi Jim,
Others will come and help, but for now, try the RV campground reviews. It has helped us a bunch.
Here is one area:
http://www.campgroundreviews.com/regions.../Montrose.html
I just 'Google' the area, and in the list of 'hits', you will see RV Campground reviews.

Thanks Ozz. It was one of your former post I was looking for with the search function. Maybe my memory fails but I thought you had posted a recommendation for a park in both Estes and Loveland. Couldn't find either. Jim

OK, I have direct experience with three of these (I have not stayed in Glenwood Springs).
We have always stayed at Spruce Lake Park on Mary's Lake Road in Estes Park, and will be doing so again in September. It is expensive and sites are close, but it remains our pick, and so we will return.
In Gunnison we stay at the Tall Texan RV Park just off 135 N (The road to Crested Butte). That remains our first choice for several reasons, a primary one is its location. There are a good many seasonal guests but they have always welcomed us into the community.
In Durango we have stayed at the United Campground which 'backs up' to the narrow gauge railway. It is not my favorite, but the other campgrounds which I prefer are way out at Lake Vallecto.

Thanks to both of you for the info. Dave, will the seasonal guest still be in Gunnison in Sept? Jim

Our experience has been that many of them will have left, but there will be some who will stay on for a month or so.
I would emphasize that this has never been a problem for us. We have found them to be fine people and we fit right in. There have been plenty of good sites in September. Cable TV is available, but WIFI does not reach all the way to many of the sites. It works good around the office area and there are places to sit inside or out.

Dave, I guess I didn't make that sound right. I certainly wasn't concerned with them being there. Heck I think I can fit in about anywhere. I was just wondering if availability would be a problem. We seldom make advanced reservations when on the road as we never know when we are going to move. Thanks for the info! Jim

You should not have any trouble in September by just showing up. That is what we have always done.
Edit to add that I have just made reservations at Spruce Lake in Estes Park. There you DO need reservations in September.
Another fine campground is in Creede, CO: Mountain View/Riverside (name from memory.) It is one of the nicest in Southwestern Colorado.
We also have reservations at Cheyenne Mountain State Park near Colorado Springs. We were lucky to get them.

I'll take advantage of this topic to post our plans for the next couple of weeks.
We will leave on Wednesday, August 31 stay over at Ol' Cotton Gin RV near Quanah, Texas. Next Night at Cedar Rail atop Raton Pass.
Friday, Sat., and Sun. at Gunnison, Tall Texan Campground
Mon - Friday (Sept 5 - 9) Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Colorado Springs
Friday - Tuesday Sept 9-13: Spruce Lake RV, Estes Park
That's enough for now. We will be going on up through the Dakotas before heading South toward home.

We have camped in all of these places mentioned above many times over the years.
Be careful in Glenwood Springs. The traffic on the very narrow streets, uncluding the highway southbound through downtown is tight. The Police Department in Glenwood Springs is also very strict and in our experience very unfriendly. We have not been officially contacted by the police there but the times we have met and even asked directions with the police, we have been notified that "big rigs are not welcome".
The Tall Texan Resort in Gunnison is a nice place. We have always enjoyed it. A few times, some years ago, we met and visited, and had supper with Colorado Governor Love and his wife who also stayed at the Tall Texan (Owned by George Briley) when the Governor and his wife stayed over weekends in Gunnison. In July, the Cattlemen's Days celebration in Gunnison is worth seeing also.
Another RV Park that we have enjoyed in Gunnison is West of Town on the Lake, Mesa RV Resort(Good Sam Park).
We have also stayed at Gunnison Lakeside Resort (A Passport Park), also West of Town on U.S. 50.
The KOA Park just at the West edge of town in Gunnison is also a very nice RV Park and is the closest to town.
The National Park Service also has a number of Parks at Gunnison, The Largest of all at the East area of the Lake along U.S. 50.
There is also a very nice Forest Service Campground at Taylor Lake Northwest of Gunnison and up the Taylor River from Almont.
