Broken leaf spring

I need help. I had a leaf spring break right by the eye. I have a 2008 Keystone Montana I looked all over and can not find what axel weight I have. There are no tags or any thing that indicates what axels I have.

My Montana Weights 11980 GVW. I know they're not 6,000 lb axles. They have six leaf and 26 inches eye to eye.

The axle weight should be stamped into the axle. You will have to crawl underneath and and clean off the axle to find the markings.
I believe in 2008 they may have moved to 7K axles from 6K. The change occurred in that time frame. Regardless I would go for 7K axles as they were needed on the larger (3500) Montanas

It might be a good time to consider new axles/brakes. I upgraded my '17 305RL from 6k to 7K during the addition of disc brakes.

If one spring went, IMHO, the ;likely hood of another issue increases

I had 2 different leaf Springs break during 2 different trips. Had to have "emergency" repairs enroute...not fun!

When I got home from the second trip, I investigated and found that Keystone built it with 6,000 pound axles and 2,500 pound springs. I changed the springs to 3,000 pound ones. This also fixed my tire issue. The inside edge of all 4 new tires were almost worn down to the cords after 7,000 miles. The rest of the tire had lots of tread.

This is probably the springs on your rig, and they are the same springs on our rig as I had to replace a broken one a couple of years ago, and our rig has 7K axles and 3,500 lb springs.

Thanks for the thread ...Gonna double check ours just to make sure what we have. Already planned to check them over and make sure everything is good anyway.

Think about a new wet bolt kit when doing the repairs.

We have a 2007 3400RL and have had axle problems the past couple years. When just leaving for a trip last year, we had a spring break right in half at the axle. We were less then 30 miles from home, but too far away to limp back. Had a local truck repair shop replace all 4 springs with upgraded (3500#) springs and things seemed to be fine. We finished our trip and last fall I had an alignment check done on the trailer and was advise my springs were too long! They worked, but were banging into the rubber middle suspension block.

I contacted Denise Schrock at Dexter Axle (DSchrock@dexteraxle.com) and she sent me information on how to determine the axle number, which she needed to get me the proper specs for leaf springs.

Here's what she sent me... (tried to insert document narrative here but couldn't so I'll type it out).
"In the unlikely event that you should require service assistance from Dexter Axle, please have the lot (serial) number of the axle available when you call.

On all axles produced after April 2001, this nine digit number can be found near the center on the rear side of the axle beam. Look for the words DEXTER AXLE and the lot number will be located directly under the name. For easier identification, rubbing a piece of chalk over the number may help bring out the engraving."

I had to clean all the hard dirt off the axle in the area where the lot number is to find it. The numbers were nice a large to read, but not very clear, so you need to clean the axle real good.

Once I had my lot number I emailed her again and she send me several PDF files for the axles I need, or were originally installed, as well as a lot of other good information.

I replaced all 4 springs with the correct sized axles but with 3500# springs. The Dexter part number for MY axles is 072-098-00, equivalent part number UNA222.

I have a 2010 Montana Mountaineer 326 RLT. I found my axle size by crawling underneath behind the rear axle. I couldn't find anything atamped on them. Then I took a pocket knife and slightly scraped along the back side. And I was using a flashlight. It was stamped just a little right of center on the back side of the rear axle. The scratching with the knife really helped.
