Just to share prices I fueled up today in Western NY @$4.25 per gallon/ Gasoline was $3.38

Looks like my budgeting for this year at $5.00 per gallon is turning out to be prophesy unfortunately.

Oil reached $111 this AM before dropping back a bit.

Remember way back when oil was $87/bbl?

Remember the near panic of when oil hit $70 a barrel. Those were the good old days.

Years (and years and years) ago I worked for Phillips 66 and then Texaco in Albuquerque. At that point we used to get the fuel dumped and then would pay the jobber (dealer) for the gas sold that past week. So, in hind-sight, we were charging for what we had in the ground. As mentioned several times, a coworker's husband is the local BP (now CENEX) station owner and brother-in-law is the 'jobber' as I recall their terminology. Regardless, BIL comes in with a load of fuel from the bulk plant and gets paid for the load before it gets put into the ground tanks. Price at the pump has already been raised to cover the cost of what is being brought in. So, in this model at least, we have gone from a pay for what we got in the past to a pay for what we have to replace it with costing. With computers that price changes hourly and the academic community has seen discussions wondering how long it will be before we start seeing the same at the consumer level....

Yesterday I had to make 2 trips to Lowes (I know I'm not the only one who always forgets something). On the way I passed a station selling Regular at $3.27 per gal and diesel at $3.89. Passed it again on my way back to Lowes, prices were unchanged. 20 minutes later on my way back home, regular remained at $3.37, but diesel had jumped to $3.94.

I am just wondering why we had price increase of about 300% in the last 3-4 years and at the same time the other countries had increase of 100-150%.

We talked about this today and decided on $5.10 per gallon as the trip point.. If it is less ( by 25 may 2008) we go. If it is more, we stay local for the summer. We usually go to Kentucky and then north to Drummond Island MI and home. It works out to about 5-6000 miles round trip. At 10 mpg and 5.00 / gal that's a lot of beer. When we started this some years back I used tp figure $1000 for fuel.

We also have a Honda Hybrid and are considering a bumper trailer with tent and air mattresses. Just like the old days -- why not? I'll have to think on this one.

To think that we started backpacking and tenting with our kids 30+ years ago. We graduated to a pop up, than a bigger one, than a TT, class C, 5th wheel and now our new 5ver. It all comes down to making that lemonade with the lemons God gave us. I'm still going to make the best lemonade I can in spite of the fuel problems.

Although I understand why those of you without restriction will continue to explore the USA with the Montana in tow ... you realize you're playing right into the "consumer models" the financial gurus for big oil have drawn up. Americans will pull up to the pump ... gripe and stomp all the way over to the credit card slot ... then fill it up and be off down the hiway at $4-$5+ per every 10 miles. Bye Ned, we've earned this luxury. Sadly come summer, I'll be right with you pulling to the lakes, burning fuel by land and by sea!

Our trip point was 4.03 per gallon for diesel.(a 20% increase factor) That was calculated at the beginning of our travel year based on the national average for diesel at that time. Our projected travel budget for the year had that 20% factor figured in. Diesel is near, at or over that number now. We have to get back to Ohio no matter what the price of fuel next month. We have been adjusting as we go along and we are still under all over budget at this time. We have already deleted two rallies this summer and fall and our New England trip will be the next cut if things continue as they are. We have no choice but to stay within available funds. If you read the finanical news you know that the oil demand is down..supply is up.Near everything else in the economy is down but prices on everything are up due to our failing Dollar. Things will get much worse and even the most fortunate of us will feel the effect.

My thinking is we work hard for our money and for our toys and If we can afford to have nearly $100k tied up in a truck/trailer in the driveway then Ive got no business complaining about the costs to use them. If I were retired and on a fixed income or fulltiming Im sure Id feel differently but for us this is nothing more than a luxury. We both have pensions, put generous amounts of our income into 401k/IRA's and since we cant take it with us when we die, we're spending the rest while we're young and in good health. I might slow down to conserve but I wont stop travelling! Vacations(even short ones) keep me sane.

Thought Bush was sending everybody $600 to buy fuel, so he must have heard about the high cost of fuel now. Don't know if the wife will spend hers on fuel.

Amen to all. My buddy Wally always said "we think we're still having fun" and he did until the day he passed away. My grandfather had a good one whenever my grandmother complained about what he ate he would say "at least I'll die with a smile on my face" and he did.

Should have never opened my mouth. Pages and pages and pages and pages back I posted we were $3.90 ish a gallon here in Seward. Well, no longer. Bernie paid a hefty $4.09/gallon on Wednesday. Sad thing is the pumps cut off at $100.00. So, we have to load that card back in there and finish. And ALL the gas stations in town charge the same rate. Don't you love a monopoly???? But I agree with you Snownyet, I have a lot of money tied up in a truck and Montana. Glad I can afford them and the diesel it takes to move them!
