Buying a gas grill?

Hello all, I have a small Weber I have used for almost 10 years. Gone thru 2 heat diffuser plates @ $25 each.



So, instead of spending another $25 considering just buying a new grill.

We go to Colorado (7,700')in the summer and I see a lot of the Coleman Road Trip LXE grills in the campground we go to. About $125 on sale.

Looking for what you guys are using

Weber Q1200 after having a few cheap ones. Great decision for us, love our Weber Q.

Get one of the Weber Q series grills ... you'll not go wrong. They cook great and last forever. We use the smaller Q1000 (baby Q) as it suites our needs.

Weber Q here too. Best grille I have ever owned. Can't speak for the wind, but I have cooked with the cover down.

Weber Q1200. The only difference between the 1000 and 1200 are the wing tops, which are handy. Most of my cooking is with the top down and it does fine in the wind.

I replaced a Weber Q with a Coleman last year. What a disappointment! Will be returning to Weber.

Don't know why people think they've got to spend over $100 for a grill that will 'last'. We've had a no brand name one that's got a cast aluminum body (not stamped steel), folding steel feet and an old fashioned chrome steel grill that's lasted six years now. Uses the little bottles of LP that I refill since I use them for our Mr. Buddy heater too. Grill cost $45 at Wallymart.

Weber Q. Cannot go wrong with Weber. I have tried the cheaper route and it was just a waste of money. They do not cook evenly, are hard to get to hold a temperature and generally fall apart with the bumps and grinds of RV use.

For those of you with a Q. On low, with the lid shut, do you have any idea what the internal temps are.

Last year we took a pellet smoker to Colorado. Leaving it at home this year.

Thinking if the Q1200 will go to around 225 degrees on low, add a smoke tube and do ribs on it for a 3-2-1 cook.

Hate to buy a small smoker just for summer in Colorado but I do "need" a new gas grill. Have had 100% satisfaction with Weber stuff and yes it costs more, but..

I'd guess you could get it down to around 250 with the lid shut. We cook around 325 with it shut. You have to remember the cast iron cooking grate on the Webers make cooking a bit different from the grills with just wire grates. It's slower to heat up, but maintains the heat and maintains it more evenly. My baby Q does best with the lid closed as with the cast iron grate, the burner tube seems smaller.
twopetes ... as for refilling the small propane bottles ... Harbor Freight and other vendors sell a brass coupling that screws on to the big bottles on your RV. It in turn screws on to the disposable bottles that go on to your grill. You have to turn your big bottle upside down to fill them. If you put the empty disposable bottles in the freezer for say 30 minutes, they fill better.

I go into research mode for many things: truck, trailer, bicycles, heck even mountain bike shoes. I suffer from analysis paralysis as a result a lot of the time. For years, my attitude toward grills, for home and camping, was to buy a cheap one and get as much out of it as possible, then buy another cheap one. I still do that for home. But, practically all I see when camping it seems is these Weber Q's. I decided this time around to spend a little more and see what the hubbub was all about. I'm glad I did. It cooks evenly, cleans up easily, and fits in storage, no problem. This is what it's like to have a nice grill. I can understand Walt Bennett's point, but this time around, at least, I spared myself the research and followed the lead of many other campers. I will buy another cheapo for the house though.

Thanks Guys, Think I have settled on the Q1200. A higher dome lid and a couple of flip out shelves. Now to find a sale by end of April.

The Weber I have now is probably 10 years old and everything is perfect except the diffuser plate is gone again. Kinda like putting tires on your favorite car, sometimes you get the itch for a new car.

Kinda funny, almost everyone here are Q folks. In Colorado most everyone has the Coleman stuff.

I note the Weber Q has 1-8,500btu burner 189sq in grate, while the Coleman has 20,000btu and a 285sq in grate. In the reviews of the Coleman it is mentioned it cooks hot and fast, and I like a slower cook. But at 7-9,000 ft I had to turn the pressure screw in the regulator about a quarter turn to get my old Weber portable to burn right.

So, you Q guys, experience at higher altitudes? I am between 7-9k ft in the summer.

Guess I am in research overload, noting the Q has 44.9 btu per sq in while the Coleman has 70.1 btu per sq in of grate space.

If you are still with me, I would ask you look at a link and read, read the stories in the box on the lower right, especially the story about the Lu-Lu of a Luau. Imagine it in today's world.

Just found out the Weber is Made in the USA, the Coleman Roadtrip is Made in CHINA. Decision made.

I have gone through many cheap grills, and finally 2 years ago I got one of the Stainless Steel units from Lowe's. Works great; cleans up nicely and I use a 1.5gal propane bottle to feed it, which last a long time. For wind deflection, I use a 3 sided aluminum deflector I picked up at Quartzite several years ago...works great...also use it when doing some Dutch Oven cooking, if it is windy..
