Alaska Highway Driving

We are about 1/3 of the way thru our Alaska Adventure and so far everything is really doing good. The Alaska Highway will really give your rig a shakedown! So far, the heater door fell off, the sewer door lock needs to be replaced, the hinge on the washer-dryer door fell apart (because it was put on up-side down),the small table cracked from a had bounce, and the home theatre system bit the dust. That may sound like a long list--but the critical items are still going strong--refrig, heater, hot water, etc. A few screws and duct tape have fixed most items. We left San Antonio on May 25 and have about 6000 miles on the rig.

timandsusan,

Do you have an air-ride type hitch? We have a 5th Airborne hitch that we are thrilled with the way it works. We have not noticed anything that is out of place inside since installing this hitch.

Good luck with your trip, sounds like a great one. We are headed to Anchorage next summer, so keep us posted!

I'm so sorry to hear about this happening to your beautiful coach. When we did this trip last year the only problems we had was dirt, dirt and more dirt. I have heard that the Alcan is a lot worse this year though. Not to worry, when you get home you will be itching to go back again.

Having just left Alaska on 10 Jun, the first 50-100 miles into Canada from Tok are probably the worst. A lot of construction and one lane traffic plus dirt, dirt and more dirt. I had to replace air and fuel filter in Whitehorse, plus lost two tires enroute. I would suggest to anyone making the trip, carry extra filters and an extra tire for trailer, if possible. The Doran pressure pro saved me from having any damage to TT after two flats. Gotta love it!!!!!! Resting up in Spokane, WA before our Life on Wheels conference in Moscow, ID starting Jul 5th.

Oh, almost forgot, for those of you travelling to Alaska, don't even bother keeping track of MPG or worry about the cost of gas in Canada because IT IS EXPENSIVE, but a necessary evil. It was running about $2.89/gal in Alaska and over $4.50 in Canada.

Above all, watch out for the frost heaves, they put little red flags next to the road where they are the worst, but sometimes you come up on them very quick without much time for braking.

Above all, have a safe and joyous trip and stay away from Chilcoot Charlies or the Bush Company in Anchorage.....

Phil

There are never big enough problems to spoil a trip to Alaska. The roads did get dirty and dusty but the drive is awesome. Hope your list of things to go wrong is complete and all goes well from now on. Enjoy! It's a wonderful trip.

Thanks for the encouraging replies. Yes, the trip is really worth it! To tighten a few screws and get a new door for the water heater is not difficult. The great northern pike fishing and flying about 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle to Anaktuvuk Pass make this the trip of a lifetime! I know the salmon and halibut fishing in Soldotna will make the time fly. Watch our trip journal if you are interested at

Have a great trip, we made it last year with no troubles except one flat on the TV. We still have 2 extra spare tires so we'll have to go back again. We took the Cassier (sic) Hwy on the return trip, it wasn't as bad as was claimed. The Canadian Rockies are wonderfull also, near Lake Louse and Jasper. Did you stop at the Columbia Ice Fields? It's amazing, the water drains to three oceans from there, Arctic, Pacific and Atlantic. The fuel prices up in Canada, make you glad to pay $3.00 a gallon in the states.
Happy Trails,
Jerry

Tim, while you are in Ninilchik you should book a charter trip with Salty Dog Charters. Tim Rebischke is the captain and you will have a great time. They also run the Deep Creek inn. He has a 32 footer with twin 250's and you are out fishing in 15 minutes and usually limit out in just a few hours. HINT: Don't keep anything under 40 lbs unless it is getting late in the day. The big ones are there, you just have to be patient.....Have a great time.....
