Air compressor

Has anyone had experience with an air compressor from Vital Air model 460c?

http://www.viaircorp.com/460c.html

I have a Ford F250 pulling a 2980 RL and when I go in for routine TV maintenance I usually have the tires checked for tire pressure. Seems like every dealer has a different understanding of proper towing tire pressure. The last dealer put 65 psi in the front tire and 80 psi in the rear tire of the tv. Said they put the max based on the tire info. Ford says 60 front 75 rear.
What do you do for cold tire pressure?

I run 65 all around when not towing. When towing, 65 in the fronts, 80 in the rears. The tires have worn well with almost 64k on them and maybe 10k to 15k left, so I must not be too far off.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I am looking for a good compressor that I can carry and will pump enough pressure. Maybe this is the one.

A question for Ozz, I have a Porter Cable air compressor, I use it for my nail gun and to put air in the tires. I want to get one of those converters from CW that you can hook to your battery with clips and it will allow you to plug in a 110 air compressor. What size converter would be best?

Ahhh, the old inverter operating a motor, dilemma. I'm afraid the chances are not good that you will want to spend the money for an inverter and battery system to do the job, you could buy a generator cheaper. It probably takes around 15 amps, running, and 2 or 3 (or more) times that to get started for a split second. It would draw so many amps, you would have to hard wire it, the jumper ends wouldn't be a good enough connection.
The starting amps are so high, that it takes a large inverter to overcome it, much like an air conditioner.
I have a 3,000 watt, with a surge much higher, it might do the job, but then you have to have the dual 6 Volt Golf Cart batteries, battery disconnect switch, 250 amp fuse, very heavy battery cables, then you would want a transfer switch to utilize the system for your RV, and on and on........It's quite possible someone has done it, but it won't be easy, or cheap.
Get a 5# bottle of CO2 gas, a regulator, and you have your air supply. $14.00 for a refill.
I have used it with no regulator, but wouldn't recommend it.....
Good luck,
Ozz

OK I will put my two cents worth in on this. Old GI I have the same pancake Porta Cable compressor and do run it off inverter. I installed a 2500 watt inverter under back seat of my truck. Took out the metal folding platform pan and installed it under the passenger side back seat. Got it from www.inverters.com for $179.00, has peak of 3,800 watts sustained of 2500 watts. Hard wired 2/0 cables under the truck to engine compartment have two in series 150 AMP circuit breakers just before the battery. these are the water proof type from Advance Auto Bussman brand 30.00 bucks each. Since I have a PSD I have two batteries already in my truck. I can and have run my air compressor off it and drained it and ran it again and again and it works fine. Know you don't want to keep it up for extremely long times as the batteries in your truck are not designed for it. But for short periods they will hold fine, just make sure your truck is running when trying to run the Air Compressor off it. The main reason I did it this way is for pumping up truck and Monty tires while on the side of the road, just in case a problem. If I had seen what OZZ did prior with the on board compressor I more than likely would have done that and rigged up a fitting on outside of the truck for air like he did, but I had already ordered the inverter and it works fine. Know hold onto your wallet when you get that 2/0 welding cable it's very expensive. You will need about 15 foot of it to mount under the back seat and run it through the floorboard where the rubber plugs are. You will only need pos side that long the neg side you can mount to the back seat mounts and get good ground there.

Broome101, That, my friend is a nice job. I'm glad you posted the warning about the batteries, most, (or some) people do not know the difference in practical use, about starting batteries and deep cell batteries. The starting batteries having lighter construction, the deep cell heaver, and made for discharging very low, then recharging multiple times without collapsing the cell construction.

Hey, Pete,
I think it's Harbor Freight has a pretty nice looking Knock-off of the big Viair 12 volt compressor for under a hunnert bucks. You might look into that.
Also, don't rule out that 5# bottle, (or larger) of CO2 with a regulator and hose. Many people have and love them.
(I, of course, am Mr. redundancy, have Two of the bottles I will be carrying for back up air.)
I had a potty tank blockage when I did not know better, couldn't get it to drain for nuthin, I was laying on the ground on South Padre, banging on the drain pipe and tank with a rubber mallet, neighbors were gathering around....
I took the CO2 tank hose, packed some rags around the potty basin and one small charge, and it all discharged. The neighbors clapped, and I went and had a beer.
