Brake adjusters??

when we got our monty in the fall of 2011 I pulled all four wheels and did a bearing repack and adjusted all wheel bearings. Yes it was brand new , but I don't trust the factory workmanship. I need peace of mind as I travel down the road. Anyway our unite was in a permanent site all last year so very little highway use. So this year I know I just need to jack it up and check the bearing adjustments and check the brake adjustments. All bearing were still in perfect adjustment, but when I took off the little plastic caps to adjust the brakes I didn't see the star wheel to turn, all that i could see was a spring. Does this mean the brakes are self adjusters? the spring looked like it was pushing the shoes apart.

With that year I believe you have self adjusting.

Kevin you still have the star wheel with self ajust brakes. sometimes they are hard to see are you looking in both plugs? the self ajusting arm kicks the star wheel to tighten the brakes when needed. JMHO

Even the self adjusters have star wheels ... there should be two rubber plugs at the bottom of each backing plate ... on the left side for instance, the star wheel is just barely rearward of the rear plug. If you should have a single rubber plug, the same position.

thanks guys, I will crawl under again tomorrow. Yes I took both plugs out and looked really good in all directions. I know what I was looking for but just didn't see it. All I could see was a big spring around a smooth metal shaft, no star wheel, no arm that rides on the star wheel or any threads.

+1

Even the self adjusters have the star wheel. You need them when you first set them up or when your trying to remove the drums and the linings are tight against them preventing removal.

If it hasn't been on the road, just check the tires and go, there is nothing with the wheel bearing or brakes sitting will do that requires service

It has been on the road some. PA to RI to CT to NH and back to PA. I am a firm believer in preventative maintenance. When I brought the monty home new right off the assembly line everything came apart or was double checked. It's all about peace of mind.

To be sure what you have for future reference, you ought to pull a wheel and hub just to see for yourself what your setup looks like. Then you'll know what has to be done later on.

For all that have self-adjusters, are you finding that they keep the brakes asjusted up enough or are you having to manually adjust up periodically?
