Canada Bound

Greetings, My wife and I are planning to take a trip to Canada in June and July of this year. We are going to be camping in Maine for the first week and then heading up I-95 (or Route 1) to canada. If we take Route 1, my question is, is Route 1 passable all the way to vehicles of our height? If we take route 1 and then route 1 in Canada we will be looking for places to stay. Any information on campgrounds would be helpful. Eventually, we plan to make it to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and then north to the St. Lawrence Seaway and down to Montreal. After Montreal head south to I-87 and back home to upstate NY. If anyone here has gone to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island & has any "Must See" Places, we would surely appreciate info on them. Also nice campgrounds if you know of any.
We would love to visit any camgound by the ocean if there is any.

We made that trip in reverse of your planned trip last year. I also was concerned about low clearances and found an app for my Tom Tom GPS that could be programed to alarm at a safe distance before the low clearance. I also purchased a copy of Rand McNally's "Motor Carriers Road Atlas". They have all the low clearances listed state by state for truck routes so some of the non-truck routes could still be a problem. Canada is usually good about low clearance signage when exiting a main highway or turning onto a road that has a low clearance.

My Canadian atlas is in the trailer which is in the storage yard so I can't give you particulars but there are some low clearances near Moncton, NB and a few on the coast Highway between Shediac and Cambellton, NB.

We came across NB on Canada 2 and entered the USA at Woodstock and that was a good highway. Most of the highways in Quebec, Nova Scotia and PEI had good clearances as I recall.

A couple of things we enjoyed along the way was: Campobello, which of course was FDR's summer cottage (if you can call a 27 room house a cottage. Campobello Island is actually in NB but can be accessed via a bridge at Lubec, ME., Arcadia NP and Bar Harbor, ME were intresting and worth a ton of Pixs, The Bay of Fundy is the place everyone needs to see especially at low tide and Hopewell Rocks south of Moncton, NB is worth stopping at. The lighthouses are fun to see and photograph and check out (again on the Bay of Fundy) any harbor in Nova Scotia at low tide. The boats that didn't go fishing during high tide are just left to sit on the harbor floor until the tide ebbs.

In Quebec, Old Quebec City is really interesting. We stayed on the South side of the river in Levis and took the ferry across to Quebec City. The ferry terminal is right in the middle of the tourist district.

We went up year before last. Took I95 as far as Bangor, where we picked up hiway 9. We crossed into New Bruswick at St Stephen. We then took hiway 1 toward Moncton, but swung south to Fundy National Park where we spent a delightful couple of days. After that we zipped back up through Moncton and took Canada 104 out onto Nova Scotia. We elected to go straight out to Cape Breton Island, the north eastern part of NS. we stayed in a campground in Baddeck, and toured on the Cabot Trail and went to Louisbourg as day trips. Don't take the trailer on the Trail, and do it in a clock wise manner; you get the best views that way.
After a few days there we went to PEI. The two ways there are the bridge and the ferry. It costs NOTHING to get to the island, but you pay to get off. Because of that we elected to take the one hour ferry ride from Pictou to Wood Islands on PEI. Great trip, totally free! When we left we went by the bridge and it was only something like $30.00. Not bad!
From there it was Canada 2 to Quebec City, then on to Toronto then south. It was a tremendous trip, and we only scratched the surface in Nova Scotia. I'd like to go back and spend a month. If you are in to single malt whiskey, there is a distillery called Glen Breton that has tours and makes some of the finest, smoothest, non peat tasting single malt I have ever had. Even DW, who is NOT a scotch drinker tried it and loved it! If you need any more info, I'll try to remember!

We did the Maritimes in 2011 from Maine--see our trip journal for all the details on New Brunswick, PEI, & Cape Breton. A hidden gem is St. Marin's, NB. The road into town is a little rough but take you time. The Century Family Farms Campground in St. Martins is on the Bay of Fundy. IT is a GREAT place. Don't miss the Fundy Trail park that is just north of St. Martins. You can see other spots where we stayed on the trip journal--email if you have any specific questions.
