Turbo Intercooler
Was on the first part of a 3 month trip heading from CA to New Orleans when pulling into town at Ft Stockton TX on I-10 for gas I heard a load pop. The truck lost all power to pull at 60 mph so we nursed the truck and rig into a gas station Got the gas and inquired about a Ford dealer. Luck would have it that there was one in town. We pulled to the dealer and told them what the problem was. They were backed up and could not get to us until late in the day. The mechanic found a loose hose to the turbo from the air filter. Thought that was the problem initially. Pulled the trailer and no dice. The dealer let us camp in their parking lot over night. Next morning truck was diagnosed with a blown intercooler for the turbo. I am not a mechanic and learned what the intercooler was for. Cools the exhaust air for the turbo input. If this part is not working the you have no turbo boost.Part was ordered from Odessa and had the truck back together by the afternoon for us to be on our way.

When I had the Banks Power Pack installed on my truck, an intercooler was part of the package. Those diesel engines really like cool air into the turbo.

Mine did the same thing last year while pulling trailer home from a vacation down in Texas. As luck would have it it happened close to a town that had a large truck only ford dealer and they knew exactly what needed fixed. Told me there is an updated part with better clamps that will prevent this from happening again. Had me fixed up and going in no time.

Yours was the actual intercooler? The pop makes it sound like the hose blew off. That was a problem on some of the early 6.0's. I wonder if the dealer just made a few extra bucks from Ford by replacing the intercooler. Or maybe it really was a blown intercooler. Trukdoc, where you at?

Steve,
It was diffently the intercooler. The part is pastic and held together at the sides with bent metal clamps. One side of the clamp had completely come unattached from the plastic. Hope I got the updated part but not sure.
