I 10

We came west from Floriduh in October and I got really tired of the 30 mile bridge's constant, rhythmatic, ka thump, ka thump, etc., ad nauseum. However, if you can stand that I 10 is little worse than most other overused and under maintained Interstates that I have been on. We went to Disney World and back using I 20 and I 10 and never have I seen so much construction which I got really tired of but I am glad to see it getting done. Our Highways need to be maintained and interruptions are the price one pays for maintenance and new construction. We had few delays in October.

Charleskorte,

What you say is true but you can get to the place from which you can get there.

Keep in mind that you are coming from Illinois, so when someone says another State has rough roads you may have to take it with a grain of salt. Compared to what you are used to they may actually be great roads!

We are originally from Illinois and visit every summer. Is it true they have now changed the official State tree to a construction barrel?

If you can handle the roads around Chicago, then the Louisiana roads are a piece of French pastry. Always construction around Dallas and Waco.

I agree with Marian. I-20 thru Louisiana is terrible. No signs warning for 1'+ dips and every on/off bridge crossing made RV tires come off the road. Google Maps suggests I-55 to St Louis, then I-44 to Dallas, then I-35E to San Antonio. I've only traveled I-35E north of Dallas which is smooth. Safe Travels

We have friends we are meeting in Texas who drove the 55 south to 44 west to 35 south just one month ago. 44 through Oklahoma City is also very rough. We understand that there are rough roads all over our great country. Construction zones are a pain but if we want good roads that is our price to pay as Hosssmith says. But being aware of sections beforehand is helpful. I thank each and everyone for their input.

route to San Antonio

We've done this trip 4-5 times over the last year since my daughter now lives in Texas, but we also winter in FL, so we have experience with I-20 and I-10 too. When going through Illinois, our first choice would be to take I-55 south and head to St. Louis, (we use the bypass of 270 and 265 {it's really not that bad} around the east and south side of St. Louis) and then head southwest on I-44 to Oklahoma City. Then we get on I-35 and stay on the I-35W side through Ft. Worth until it reconnects with I-35 to San Antonio. You avoid Dallas altogether if you stay on I-35W. We think this is just such a smooth and unencumbered trip. Oklahoma City can be a little challenging, but certainly not daunting. Unless you have to, I would avoid Shreveport east and south sides, (interstates are just the worst) Our second choice would be to stay on I-55 to west Memphis, then I-40 to Little Rock and I-30 to Dallas, but the transitions are not as smooth and there's more road construction. I don't like coming into Dallas on I-30, so you may want to go further south and pick up I-20 to get to I-35.

Ontario to Florida anyone?

We are heading to the Florida Keys from St. Catharines, Ontario leaving Feb. 2 for our first extended stay trip south and winter road conditions especially down thru Pittsburgh on I-79 are making me a little nervous. Anyone got any suggestions or recent travel notes?

We traveled from southwest Minnesota to Victoria TX in December and think the I 35 corridor is a fairly stable route. Heavy traffic in Fort Worth Dallas was a pita. But road conditions were good. The Kansas turnpike will cost you around $40. But what a great road. Smooth as glass. We were in San Antonio a few weeks ago (3 hrs from here) for the Alamo Bowl, what a wonderful city. Our 5th time visiting there. Travel safe

IH35 road conditions report

My observations of Austin to DFW on IH35
January 1985 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
June 1988 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
October 1991 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
December 1995 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
June 2003 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
November 2010 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.
December 16, 2018 - boy I35 sure will be nice when they finish this road construction.

The bright spots in all of this is Bucee’s. Make sure you stop for gas and restroom break at one of the Bucee’s on IH35...north of Fort Worth...north side of Temple...or in New Braunfels. DW and I (and dogs) love Bucee’s.

we have a Buccee's in Bastrop. Granddaughters think of it as a destination when they are here

Well we are sitting in AZ now and sorry I didn't post sooner but we headed out of Baton Rouge on I-10 and took it all the way to where we got off it here in Benson, AZ. There is plenty of construction along I-10 and the road just west of Baton Rouge is a little rough but nothing that bad if you take your time and keep your speed down between 60-65 which we normally drive at anyway. I-10 in Texas was pretty good with some construction again but that is typical for any highways down South any time of the year. There were some narrow lanes in the construction sites but nothing that should bother you. If they make them wide enough for semi's, it's no problem with the fiver. One thing you will have to watch for is "road alligators" or the retreads that have come off the semi's. They are quite numerous along the whole route on I-10. Just take your time and keep your eyes open for the "gators"! Take care and have a good trip to warm country!
