I have done several of these repairs. We lived in a 24' travel trailer for the past year before buying the Montana 5er, and I had to replace almost every string in that one. Sadly, the end caps on all of mine were glued on, so I had to use a thin hacksaw blade to cut through the glue to get the caps off.

Then I realized if I catch the frayed string early enough (before it is just the thin strands in the middle with the outer sheath peeled back), I can melt the new string onto the end of the old one, and pull it from the bottom all the way up through the top and not have to take the end caps off at all. Works about 90% of the time. The rest of the time, it may break halfway through feeding it in, then I have to take off only one or two caps.

Once done you won't need any directions the second time. Or the third, fourth, etc.

Just broke my first Shade String today, on our 2013 3750FL. I cannot figure out how to get the Valance off, where are the screws/brackets? Will Camping World carry the right shade cord? The pictures are great but a video would be even greater. Are there any good video's out there on how to do it? Any helps or hints would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for sharing this! Great timing - during our last trip of 2018 that one of the shades had come loose from the "capstan" and that a few had begun to fray...!

Excellent video, will be fixing mine later this week, as I purchased my "shade string" at a nearby Camping World! Will report back on how it went! Thank you all for your input!

I made the repair today and it was not all the difficult. I think the hardest thing is trying to find the right tension to put on the cords so that they raise and lower without a lot of energy and yet don't fall down. Also, mine had 2 springs, one for each side and they were welded at a center point. I had to cut the string a few times to keep the point sharp so I could thread it through the holes. Once the string starts to fray, you can't feed it through. All in all, I would say it was about 90% as good as a professional would have done and a LOT LESS COSTS! Thank you again for all the tips.

Shade Pictures

I know this a old post, but the pictures won't open up. My blind won't stay up, how do you increase the tension?

Mine is an older unit but I experienced shades that wouldn't stay up. I loosened the bobbin screw that the string anchors to below the shade. Turned the bobbin to increse tension on the string and then tightened the screw. It is a little trial and error getting both sides tensioned evenly.

What pictures and by whom are you addressing? The links I checked (not all of them) still seem to work. This is a very old Thread started in 2008. Many of the posters are long gone.

Gubs - it seems like a 2020 Legacy unit would not have the stringed blinds. Doesn’t your unit have the Irvine Shade blinds?

Yes it does and the shade keeps falling down until the black shade came off and parts are all over the place. No idea of how to repair the darn thing.

This Thread was about the Day/Night pleated shades. You have Irvine Roller Shades which are a completely different animal. It might be better to start a new Thread with a description, and pictures, of your particular problem.

I would call Irving shades and tell them your problem. they will probably send you the parts to repair your shades. Most likely it's a bad spring assembly, they are easy to replace.
