Contaminated Fuel!! Update

As I am making a trip down the Or. coast this week I figured I would change the fuel filter since I have about 1,300 miles since Dodge changed all my emission parts a couple of weeks ago. According to the diesel tech at Rainier Dodge in Olympia there was quite a bit of particles collected in the filter so I am glad I decided to replace before I hit the road. While I was waiting for them to change the filter the tech brought in a sample of fuel he had just pulled from a truck that had just been towed in. It was about 90% nice clean green fuel but had about 10% of a brownish fluid floating on top. This fuel had plugged the filter and the DPF,ERG valve etc. He said the fuel in my tank when it messed up my system was even worst than this sample. I do not know what is going on with the fuel supply here in the NW but there have be 3 problems with bad fuel at the dealer while I was standing there waiting to pick up my truck.

Larry,
Wow! It must be a major event to fill up! Is it one particular brand or station or could it be all or any? We're in southern Oregon right now headed for Seattle. Thanks for any info.... Dennis

Dennis, the last place the other truck had gotten fuel was at a station that has a big round orange sign the has the #76 on it. It was a station in Monroe north of Seattle

Jim, I have only put fuel on at Pilot since I had my truck repaired. I hope hope the filter I just had changed was just picking up left over particles.

I get most of my fuel from there because I figure they go through alot of it there and you would think it is fresh, although I always used Chevron in my gas motor before and have had good luck with that brand...

When I was talking to the diesel tech the other day I mentioned to him I had not seen on the console any warning that my DPT filter was 70% full telling me that I needed to get the truck out on the road so it would go into the Regen mode. To which he replied that dodge had changed the program in the PCM so it doesn't let you know when you need to force a Regen because to many people were bringing their trucks to the dealers to ask what that meant on the overhead console. So if it needs to Regen it waits till you get the truck over 60 mph and hold that speed or above without touching the brakes which will cancel the Regen. The bad fuel that I got was so bad that when it burnt all I was getting was soot and it could not go into regen because it could not get hot enough. So all I can do is try to get fuel at a place that I think is going through a lot and cross my fingers.

Like DQDick said, that's scary. You hope and think that buying fuel out on the road is NOT going to cause problems, but unfortunately, sometimes that's not true.
Good luck.

Scratch travel plans to the beautiful northwest because a guy gets a bad tank of diesel, your kidding? 25 years of buying diesel fuel in the northwest and never, not once have I purchased bad fuel! I'll give you a good reason to stay home and not visit the northwest and it has nothing to do with bad fuel, how about the supply and demand up here with only two refineries, highest fuel taxes, refinery fire in Richmond California and the fuel prices spiked 25 cents per gal to 4.25 overnight last week. "it's all good"

By the way there are 5 refinery's in Wa. If you include the BioDiesel refinery that would be 6. As for bad fuel you could get it anywhere. These refinery's are running full bore and try to do major maintenance projects on a rotating schedule but fires can happen. When you have fuel running through pipes at 500 deg and at 150 psi any leaks will ignite as soon as they hit open air.

Michael and Camilla, If I were you I would make the trip to the great NW. I am just going to watch closer to where I buy fuel. If you do come bring extra clothing as you might not be going back south. Here is a photo of 30+ Elk in a field about 3 miles from my house.

Drifty1, you are correct on the number of Refineries, my bad thank you. Yes the key is to watch where you buy fuel, best to buy diesel fuel from either a truck stop or location that pumps a high amount of diesel. When I travel out of the my home area I preffer the truck stops for my diesel. The northwest is actually starting to see some warmer weather this week and it's been a terrific summer at least in SW Washington.

Vern the only reason I know this is I have worked at 3 of them. Yesterday I even stopped at the service shop of the Ford dealer here in Newport to find out who pumped the most diesel in town and if they have any problems in the area with bad fuel. That is what I call gun shy!!! They directed me to the Chevron down the street.

The comments on this thread simply support the argument for a 2nd remote fuel filter system. For $250, it's gotta be worth the cost and the piece of mind!

We noted that the Good Sam extended service plan DOES NOT cover bad fuel.
