tires again

Has anyone replaced their Goodyear Marathons with another H rated tire?
Are the Goodyears defective or are they just not strong enough to carry the weight they are carrying? Does Michelin carry a good H rated tire? Do other companies? I have heard a lot of conflicting information on replacing the " China Bombs." I want to have safe tires, but G 614's are very expensive and I'm still not sure my rims can hold them. I need to make a decision soon so any advice would be welcomed. Thank you for you consideration.

I too have the Goodyear (China Bombs) Marathon. I am making sure I have my tires inflated to the max & I pull at 55 MPH. I pray I get 5 years out of them and if I do I will buy something else. Be careful & good luck.

If you sre interested in a trailer tire Maxxis is one of the best ST tires. A lot of people use them and have not had any problems, which includes me, as I have them on our 3150RL and have not had any problems. Some people feel the negative is that they have have a max speed limitation of 65 MPH. I`m sure a number of members will be along to identify the LT (light truck) tires they recommend.

After mega research and help from the good folks here at MOC, I purchased BF Goodrich Commercial TA's last spring. Put on 3-4 thousand miles on them and couldn't be happier.

Whatever tire you want to use if you think G614s are too much for your truck and they are G rated, then you'll have the same problem or even bigger problem with any H-rated tire since those probably use even more pressure to do there job. I'll bet any reputable tire installer will check on this and will make sure the wheels meets the tire specs.

Dpams recommendation on Maxxis would probably not require a new wheel if you buy the right one that meets the trailer's axle rating or other load rating requirements. Others will also mention other brands of LTs that other rig owners are currently using successfully. And I'll bet they've gone farther than the 3-4 miles put on theirs by "The Weekenders". I'm hoping that was a typo. I'd certainly need more than 3 or 4 miles to be comfortable with my tires.

I did extensive research on this and other forums as well as from the net in general and had I not been able to beat up Goodyear for a good combined price for them taking back the Marathons and supplying me with G614's I would have gone with the Maxxis. Maxxis appeared to me to be the best option all the way around. That being said, now that we've driven a few thousand on the G614's I wouldn't change. We run them at 100# and the odd thing is that both Joyce and I swear the trailer tows better with them on. Not as much chucking and not as hard. I know that may not make any sense and could be just our mind playing tricks, but it was an initial impression and it's stayed with us so we're happy campers if it's true or not.

Another added benefit is that the tire pressure monitor is now another safety devise we use, not a check it every hour or less as we go down the road in hot weather.

Logged a lot of hwy miles at 65-70 mph with Goodyear Wranglers LT's on a 120000 lb 5er. When I pick up my Montana this week it goes right in for LT tires. Most likely will try the BF Goodrich's since that's whats on my truck now.

We have BF Goodrich Commercial TA's and are very happy with them. We had 5000 miles on our China road bombs when one literally exploded and tore up the side of the trailer. When I got home, I found another tire with broken cords. I have a tire monitoring system and keep a close eye on tire pressure and temperature. I would get rid of the Marathons as soon as you can.

I have almost 100,000 miles on Goodyear LT tires - standard size that was on the Monty. I think I am on my 3rd set - getting about 45000, but could have gotten more last time. We were headed to Alaska and wanted new tires since I only had about 5000 to 10000 left on them.
I know some people get more miles, but I think this isn't bad. One other thing, I REALLY move out - as in 10,000 or more each summer in 3 months. So I don't do that much short trip stuff.
I run the same tire (different size) on the truck. Oh, also was afraid of the 60 or 65 mph limit on ST tires. When I first started I went around 70-75 mph on interstates. I drive slower now, but if I need to get somewhere fast for a day, I will push it up.
Just my opiinion.

Ditto for me on the BFG Comm T/a. I took the word of many forum members who have them and I've been very pleased. My truck came with BFG rugged trail which have been awesome tires.

Last I heard, the Marathon comes only in D and E load ratings, not H or G.

On our prior Montana we went with the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A, load range E, and had good luck with them. We were pleased.

This Montana is heavier than that one and after serious damage to our rig from a blowout on a Chinese tire (not a Marathon), the last of several blowouts of our Chinese tires, we went with the Goodyear G614, load range G. We're coming up on two years with no tire problems.

The G614 is made in the USA. The Marathon is made in China. We had several blowouts back when we ran Marathons, too.

Going directly to the rim manufacturer we were told the stock rims on our 2010 would not take a G tire because of air pressure requirements. Dumped the marathons after 8K, started wearing badly. We have always used Firestone TransForce LT tires with good results, and running those now.

I think in some cases with your tires waring unevenly is that your axles areout of alignment. I know mine were after getting new tires from the dealership. They said it was aligned after a new front axle and 2 new tires. Didn't trust what they said and went to a specialty shop and had both axles aligned properly.

1retired06: Did you check the back side of your rims?? We have a 2010 2955RL and it came with rims rated for 110 PSI. It's cast into one of the spokes on the back side.
