Changing Tire Sizes

Do you guys think I would have any trouble installing a Firestone Transforce HT LT235 85-16 in the place of the LT215/85-16 that is the standard tire on my 06 GMC K3500 dually?? It would give me a larger footprint, more load capacity and only 10 bucks a tire more. The tire tech there said it wouldn't be a problem but those guys see dollars and I'm seeing rubbing sidewalls and such. (Sorry Lonnie) :-)

Ours has 215-85-16 andare doing very well. Only concern would be distance between duals, with the larger tires.

It will reduce the space between the duals by 20mm... just under 1" which seems a lot. You need to see what spacing Firestone says you have to have to accommodate tire flex and compression under load for DRWs.

I am strongly considering the 235 next time I replace the 215- If spacers are needed, I will add them as I did when I upgraded from 215 to 235 on our previous TV ( 95 Ford 350 dually )- We had no downside from that action- JHMO- Don

Snowbirds I went up in size on my 2008 Chevy SRW and it change the speed odometer by 1.5 miles per hour and decreased my mpg by 2 mpg but it really made the Truck look better. If I remember correctly I went to a 265?? Not really sure since I no longer have the Truck. Good Luck with your decision. I would talk to Lonnie and get his advice.....

My brother had a 2001, 3500 Chevy and while we were in Wyoming he had to get new tires. He tried to up size but could not because the tires would rub together. He only wanted to go up 1 size larger, I think from 205 to 215s.

I looked at that when my 05 Dually needed tires and decided to stay with the original size because of tire to tire clearance. What I did was put 215s on the rear and 245/70s on the front (both had the same OD) gave me a little more rubber on the front to support the Duramax weight. As noted, you could add a spacer between the wheels to increase the distance, but I would think that it might increase the stress on the axle bearings, but then again if it wasn't much it would probably be OK.

Can't answer your question, but why do you want more load capacity? The OEM tires will handle the GW.
