Water Hammer

Until today, my rig sounded like a jack-hammer was in the basement every time I used the on-board water pump. I tried extra loops in the lines, using pipe insulation on the lines, taping lines together...nothing stopped the hammering.

Today, I put in an accumulator (from Camping World). Wow! What a difference. Now I can barely hear the pump. My water pressure appears to have increased (actually, it is just smoothed out with no pulses) and the shower works better than it ever has. Wish I had done this 3 years ago when I bought the unit and other MOCers were talking about accumulators.

A valuable post Brad! I'd like to minimize the noise that's created when the pump runs and this sounds like a good tip.

Brad, how is the accumulator installed? Close to the pump or anywhere in the pump output line? Bolts to the floor? Obviously I'm not familiar with these other than the term. Thanks.

Which one did you put in? There is a 2-gallon model and a small one.

I put in the small one (about 4.5" X 8") and set the internal pressure at 30PSI. I have an upgraded FloJet 5.7 GPH pump which uses a wobble plate pumping system. I mounted the accumulator directly to the output of the pump, right behind the furnace. I did leave the mouse pad under the pump and left all the pipe insulation in place.

I just spent 5 days boondocking in Lake Havasu City to watch the Western Pyrotechnics Association do their big annual demonstrations. I know the pump was running when I opened a faucet because I had water pressure but if a nearby RV had a generator running I could not hear the pump.

Brad this is great. I was not aware this existed. When I open my faucets the pump kicks in and the water does not come out at one constant pressure. By putting this accumulater in place the pressure should be constant. I have just one question, did you have to replace/upgrade your pump or did you do want to upgrade it?
