Bearing Repack When?

I have an `09 3400 maufactured in Sept. `08. I have about 2500 miles of towing since delivery not including delivery distance. Dealer added a couple of pumps of grease last year in each hub and I did the same this year. More trips planned this year. Should I have the bearings repacked. Thanks!

I suggest you get them repacked. Your rig is over 2 years old, has been stationary a long time, the grease dries out over time and it may not have been properly lubed before delivery. I get mine done once a year, which is the recommendation, I think. They also should be checking for worn, broken or missing parts.

Repack at least once a year! I don't use a grease gun, to much of a chance to blow a seal and have greasy brakes. Did mine twice this year but I covered over 25000 KM (15500 miles) At 9000 miles, one bearing had to be replaced as it was rough. Would have never found out if we had just given it a couple of shots! As Countryfolks points out you also get a chance to check the rest of the system.

I'm going to suggest repacking. It will give you a chance to also check the brake linings and magnets, as well as the adjustment device and springs. I don't believe in pushing something to its very limits such as "well I've only got 1,000 miles on the rig." Since Dexter recommends 12,000 miles OR 12 months, I'd go with Dexter. You can't go wrong. I don't take any chances; I have ours checked annually.

We repack annually when we get the State Inspection in Texas. This is in February and sets us up for travels all year. Also get the brakes checked--this year I will get my wet bolt shackles greased also. I have a shop do it for about $75/axle--and I don't get dirty! Our annaul travels probably put 6000 to 8500 miles on the Monty. This plan works for our travel plans.
