Broken Propane Tank Valve

One of my 30 lb propane tanks (3/4 full) has a broken valve. The handle (made of pot metal) literally broke and will not engage the valve on the tank. Luckily it is in the closed position. I got the broken handle off and put a 8" crescent wrench on the valve and it will not turn either way!

I called several propane companies (AmeriGas and Suburban) and they do not repair them. I asked about an exchange and likewise cannot find anyone.

I know I can buy a new tank at Lowes or Home Depot but then I am stuck with a nearly full tank that is unusable. How and where do I dispose of it?

This can't be the first it has ever happened. Similar stories..... And what did you do?

Thanks in advnace

When I had a non-OPD valve on mine, I exchanged it at one of those Blue Rhino kiosks at HD, Lowes, etc. The clerks inside take anything.

I found a propane company that would just dispose of it for free (or $3 - I forget). Call around.

I am in Quartzsite, Arizona and I just had my valve on my propane tank replaced. The company's are right, they will not repair the valve but they will probably replace the valve. Ask about replacing the valve.

Sorry the only fix I can come up with involves a campfire, rifle and hold my beer.

Which I would not recommend using

Our local transfer station accepts propane bottles. I asked if I could 'borrow' one for the valve handle. Did the swap and took it back a week later. Also, Tractor Supply usually has some outdated bottles (over 12 years) you may be welcome to have if you ask. Blue Rhino and Amerigas locally do not exchange 30 pounders.

I'msurprised that a good supplier like Suburban or Amerigas or even a local supplier wont sell a handle as there is no liability if they do the change for a few bucks

You might have a hard time swapping the handle for these cylinders. I just looked at the handles on mine and the screws are those tamper proof one way screws that you can only tighten but not loosen.

Take the handle off your other tank and see if it will turn. If not drop it off at a propane station and buy a new tank
