Sc message on brake box in truck
We have a 2010 Montana 5er, we have had the brakes gone thru all new everything, but we keep getting the message SC on the brake box, and then a picture of a trailer with a line through it on the dash and then the message Trailer Brakes lost connection, we cant help but wonder if it isn't the cable from the hitch to the plug. Has anyone ever had this problem?

This not an uncommon problem. If you do a Search there will lots of discussions on the problem. The most common reasons are:
o - Chafed or broken wire inside the brake drum (the RR seems to be popular).
o - Chafed wire inside the axle housing. On a 2010 with recent brake work, this has a good chance of being it.
o - Bad connector where the brake wire connects to the main line feed.
o - Loose or rusty Bargman Plug on TV.
o - Bad connection in the Pin Box 4x4 box (this is pretty rare)
Hopefully others will have ideas on finding the problem.

Michele-- let us know what you find out on this thread and your replacing the umbilical cord between the unit and the tow vehicle. This has been a common problem over the years and may solutions have popped up that took care of the problems of others with the same problem.

Thank you for the suggestions. We have dwindled down to that it
Has to be the cable/plug from the 5er to the truck. Checking into a new cable, hopefully this will be it.

After years of troubleshooting/fixing airplanes, I usually look at the last thing that was done before the problem started.
Did everything work before you had your new brakes put on?
"keep getting the message SC on the brake box"
Does SC mean "short circuit "?
I have read other threads where they have found the brake wire shorted inside the drum.
I wonder if you can disconnect/reconnect one wire at a time in the 4x4 pin junction box until the error goes away? I'm not sure if this is possible or easy to do. I understand the wiring is pretty tight inside the box.
If you can do it I would start with the blue brake wire.

Thank you so much for your wonderful response. Today my husband un did all the wires where the cable/cord attache’s in the little box attached to the hitch and then put everyone of them back on and BINGO its working and not getting message anymore. Guess there was one or more loose.....we are happy full time RV’ers once again.

I'd start checking for shorted wires in the axle tubes. If the SC indication is there all the time, a simple resistance measurement with an ohm meter from the brake power pin of the 7-pin to ground will show the fault. If the SC indication is intermittent, you might not see the short when you are not bounding down the road. My TV kept reporting errors like "trailer disconnected" and "wiring problem". After a lot of troubleshooting, I bypassed the wires inside the axle tubes and the problem went away. When I pulled the wires out of the axle tubes, they were chaffed through to the conductors in several places.

I just had the exact problem. Took me many tries to find it. jack up the trailer. Rotate the tires and have someone apply the brakes. I found my issue within a few minutes. One wheel felt much weaker and didn’t stop like the others . I had a bare wire rubbing inside the drum assembly. This has been a huge problem for Dexter. They sent me 4 new brake assemblies and seals free of charge.

Perfect reason to get disc brakes and be done with the junk drum brakes. You will be amazed at the difference in stopping power. No more wires/no more magnets/no more grease on the brake shoes/no more having to remove drums to check brake shoe condition. Etc.

Beeje - thank for that disc brake info, I was wondering if the disc's worked the same. So glad we had an appointment next month to remove the shoes and install Disc's. Getting them done by Performance, after seeing the quality work at the rally, we thought if necessary for all our travels to get that done.
