Domicile/Mail Service

Reading the forums,,,so many more fulltimers use SD instead of Texas...any reason or just preference.
Thanks,
Tom - Shannon

Both are good. We chose SD because Texas requires an annual vehicle inspection that SD does not. We hear you are ok out of state but once you hit the Texas border you best skedaddle to the nearest inspection location before the sheriff finds you. Also with SD you only have to make a physical appearance in the state once every five years to renew your diriver's licence. Everything else can be done by mail, phone or email.

When we retired in Texas and hit the road, we chose S.D. over Tx. because we have family ties to S.D. Imagine our pleasure to find our vehicle plates and insurance cost SLASHED- Texas may be a nice place to winter but S.D. has much to offer as a summer base- JMHO- Don

We learned that you have 30 days from the time you enter Texas to renew your inspection.

We went with Florida, partly because we have a Daughter there so we're in Florida more than anyplace else. Like everything there are Pros and Cons to each.

I didn't jump in because we use the Escapee's mail service out of Texas but still keep our domicile in Kansas. Yes we pay more in taxes of all kinds, but until Joyce is old enough for Medicare we get inexpensive health insurance thru our business and if we weren't Kansas residents that would disappear and so would far more money. Another thing to look at is that many states are now taxing your pension whether you live out of state or not. There are many individual things to consider, including what to Florida, Texas and South Dakota currently have before their legislatures to close their funding gaps.

I went with South Dakota due to my growing up there, and all the great things I heard about Alternative Resources. I am glad I made the decision and have no regrets.

We use Nevada as our domicile because that's where we're from and it has no state tax. Our vehicles are in an LLC in Montana which costs us very little per year.

compare taxes and truck and trailer insurance.

we went with SD because it was much cheaper than texas and they accepted our motorcycle certificate. also, I had read that you needed, at one time, to have your vehicle inspected in texas.
