Quartzite is one big parking area for RVs! No water, no electric. You dry camp (boondock) with friends (or make friends). You can park free for 14 days and have to move to another 14-day area. Many park in the area all winter. We are here right now with a Christian group. Have been here since Saturday and will be leaving next Saturday.

If you have solar panels, that's a plus. Some of us do, but we still carry a Honda 2000i generator for use if we use up everything solar provides.

PaJoe,
While Orv has outlined the basic concept of Q there are many Full Hook Up RV parks located in and very near Q. The parks are just like any other commercial park. Often during the peak season..... which is the winter the parks will be booked heavily. But we've seen vacancies at most parks even at peak.

Now if you're talking about the boondocking then you've already gotten a good explanation. The Montana Circling of the Wagons is simply a chance to get out into the desert and visit with friends. We started about 6 years ago with about 5 rigs. This year there will be upwards of 65+ rigs.

Enjoy your adventure. Dennis

The BIG Quartzsite event is called the "Circling of the Wagons (Montanas)" on Plomosa Road. Others opt to stay nearby and drive to join others at Plomosa. If you stay with the rest of the wagons in that circle, everyone backs their Monty with their rearends toward the center of a large circle in a side to side fashion leaving enough room for slideouts. The circumference of the circle gets larger every year because participation increases.

There are NO hookups for participants in the circle. There are members with large water bags for refilling the fresh water tanks and bring a Porta-Tote to dump your tanks (no dumping is allowed in the area) at an approved location. For power, most use generators or solar panels in some way shape or form. Even if you don't use 110v, you'll need some means to recharge your batteries.

It is like a rally in that there are some events participants can join into. Other members staying elsewhere drive into this location to participate, visit or talk about all kinds of things. There are show-and-tells for owners' Montanas and mostly just good eating, visiting and exploring.

I hope someone posts a picture of what it looks like. It's quite a sight to see. We wish we could go, but this time of year is always bad for us. Ironically, we are close compared to many (about 200 miles one way), but maybe one of these years, we'll be able to get away for an overnighter nearby to see the wonderment.

Pictures--yes, post pictures! "Vicarious" was one of the vocab words for my students this week. I'll give them a first-hand lesson in living vicariously.

PAJoe,
Quartzsite is a lot like what Art and Margie described, but a whole lot more. The circle is formed by the “wagon master” long before anyone else arrives. Robbie Simmons has been the Wagon Master for the last couple of years. No one does any kind of “backing into” their spaces. It’s well thought out and done in a kind of “compass style”, When you drive in, your directed to a certain spot across the circle, Robbie or one of the guys who have actually been here & helped out in this procedure would be better able explain it to you.

We also have a Happy “couple” of hours every night at Five sharp. Everyone brings an appetizer. Ohhh, so good! One doesn’t even need to eat dinner. And actually there have been a couple of nights Melv & I haven’t. We also have at least one “potluck” day where everyone brings yummy yummy food and whatever games people want to play. And we all just have a great time!

Some people even go into town to the visit all the vendor shops, BEAD shops, and the big Event tent. (The tent opens up today). While the rest of them just sit back and relax in the sun and enjoy their days.

Mostly we all just have a lot of fun!

The circling of the Montana's is a site to see and better yet is a pleasure to be a part of.

We do not use porta totes, we call the honey wagon to come out and pump out our holding tanks for us ($20.00 per rig).

Several of the members have a water bladder that holds approximately 40 gallons of fresh water that we can pump into the Montana's and SOB rigs. 40 gallons of water costs a whopping $2.00.

Recharging the batteries is done either by solar or a "quiet" generator. Contractor generators are discouraged because of the noise pollution.

Members take turns taking the trash to the local dump which is free.

The circumference of the circle holds 50 rigs and will not get any larger than that because of the amount of real estate required. Currently it is 420' across the circle.

The sites in the circle are given out on a first come basis, there is also room on the outside of the circle for overflow. Currently we have 7 rigs in the overflow area now.

The last two posts have explained it to perfection. To try and explain what it is like without being here doesn't do this place justice. This is our second year here and by far one of the best gatherings of people that have a common interest. To relax, have fun and enjoy each others company. So Joe in TX, come on down next year. You are guaranteed to have a great time. Is it 5 o'clock yet, I know it is somewhere. Rich

We call it the "Circling of the Montanas"....not wagons.

The MOC forum is about solid evidence, about personal experiences, and all about members helping other members...not misinformation just for the sake of running up a post number or for exercising a typing finger.

In the 5 of the 6 years we've participated, not ONE trailer has EVER been backed-in. All sites have been pull-through.... Not once has anyone ever used a blue-boy porta-tote (YUK). Sewer dump services are supplied by a pumper truck which is arranged for by the wagonmaster in advance.

We applaud the experiences of the Quartzsite attendees and trust they will pass on legitimate information for the continued successful future of the "Circling of the Montanas".

You shouldn't call yourself an authority on cowboys just because you have the boots, the hat and the bull-riding belt buckle....you have to first ride a horse.

And, these dudes parking us in this big circle, have this down to a science, I took some photos of a few rigs getting parked, it will probably make my blog in the next week or so, very impressive.

Well said wagonmaster, but I do like the humor now and then from those who camp in there driveway.
