Heater Problem

I intended to put metal screening over the heater exhaust vent some time ago...this was on my "do list" but did not get done. As a result, I now have a huge mud dauber (wasp/hornet) nest all the way back in the exhaust on the far back wall. I can reach it with a number of long rods and polls which will knock it down, but how can I remove all the crud I just knocked down? Do I need to remove the entire heating assembly? The owner's manual is no help.

I also screened the refrigerator vents and the water heater vent when I did the heater. There are some big holes for the little buggers to get into.

Use a shop vac. You might want to fashion a flexible tube to it to reach back in a ways, but don't make it so small it gets clogged.

You can also try a coat hanger. You shouldn't have to remove the furnace.

I think I can get it knocked down, but how would I get all the parts out of the exhaust once down? If I knock it down, not sure where the parts will fall.

Okay, called Atwood, and after three calls and an hour on hold, got an answer.

- Remove the cover, held on by four screws.
- The exhaust is held on by one wing nut, remove it.
- The exhaust is now loose, it may not seem to be, you must wiggle it, but it will come out.
- Poke anything in the exhaust to knock down mud daubers. They will just fall in the exhaust, no where else.
- Suck all droppings up with shop vac or similar.
- Put back together.

After reading this thread, I screened the furnace, water heater and all refrig vents.

This may have been discussed earlier; but, what kind of screen do you use to cover the vents. And, exactly how do you attach it?

I used metal house screen. I attached it to the refrig in separate strips with Gorilla tape and to the furnace and water heater in one piece with Gorilla tape.

That Gorilla tape is really tough. We bought this RV in Aug 2006 and shortly thereafter I taped some of the seams under the belly with G tape...it's still there.
