2019 Montana water froze

Hello all, first post. I full time in my 2019 Montana high country currently in Wv. Was surprised that my fresh water tank must have froze last night temp down to 7 degree. I ran furnace on 70 all night, tank heaters were on with a additional 250 watt heat lamp in bay area. Maybe I was expecting to much with out being skirted?

Thanks. Gonna try skirting and a little heat under it today. It’s still camping at least

Are you sure the tank froze and not just the water supply line?

7 is COLD

Ya, unhooked my city supply because it was not a heated source. So figured I could fill the fresh like I had been doing while the temps dropped into 20’s with no problem. Last night was single Digit. Thanks for the reply.

I would be surprised the tank froze if you had the tank heater on and its working properly. I would be checking individual lines. I'm about an hour from you and can't imagine staying in a camper the last couple days. It was 5 here this morning and it's only in the upper teens right now.

I think skirting would benefit you greatly. Especially with a little heat added underneath.

Good luck getting un-froze and welcome to the forum.

Yea Creeker Your right it could be anything as cold as it’s been , I full time in it so I gotta take the good with the bad. Actually it’s really warm inside and nice but the single digits got to it some where. I did get skirting up today and heat under it we shall see. Gonna be here till late March so there’s a lot of rodeo left. Lol. Thx

My fresh water only froze up once but the feed line to the pump several times. It froze at-16 no skirt I was traveling. Luckily I was headed west and it thawed without hurting any plumbing. The water feed line in my 5’er runs up the frame to the water pump and it has froze more than once. I have put pipe insulation on this line all the way to the pump and it’s worked so far. I live in Montana and learned to blow out the lines while traveling or storing and a little antifreeze in the sink traps drain the hot water heater if storing and have had no problems. I do carry a air compressor while traveling. Hope this helps just a little.

Good luck. Mine was pretty easy to follow and only took a couple of hours to drop the plastic bottom covers and wrap. I used the same insulation that I use on my exposed outside water pipes.

The most problem is the hose going from the tank to the water pump. This hose is not insulated and runs near the frame. I know this from experience. I now have it insulated.

Mudchief is this main line on the ground side frame, or inside the bay behind the carpet wall? I unscrewed the carpet wall and it looks like a speggitti factory exploded. Iam on the trail thu, I believe as you guys have said this is the thing to chase down. Thx all.

Bay955 I can only speak to my model a 3175 but mine was located on the top side of the frame running between frame and galley tank was easy to access. I removed the entire basement wall. So that gave me room to work. While I had the wall out I wired my solar in and accessed the back side of my converter. And had plenty of room to pull all of my wiring. Hope this helps you. It didn’t take me very long to do this project. I did undo the covering on the underbelly to access the line to the rear of the 5’er to the water tank.

Bay955, there is a white hose that goes from the pump to the bottom of the fresh water tank. It runs along the frame to the tank. If you remove the basement wall you can see the white hose. You will have to remove the bottom on one side to insulation it. I covered the entire length with foam that you put on 1/2 inch copper pipe. I have been to -10 with no freezing.

You might want to forgo your on board water, get a heated hose and completely winterize your water hookup at the pedestal. Install your skirting. I've been in temps below zero with no problems.

Thx all. I found the line and insulated it, also as suggested ran a heated hose as main water source and skirted. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Fresh water tank

On my 2015 Montana I have 3 heated tanks. 1 for the kitchen 1 for gray water and 1 for black water. These places have my drain valves. For my fresh I do not have that tank heated.
FYI

Feel your pain

I ended up with same issue Do you use or have a electric fireplace ?? Mine froze because I have figured I ran my fireplace too much and furnace did not run as much was needed I since believe I've fixed with s small electric heater in the underbelly, but not sure yet Still doesn't work
Don't believe when it says all season That's about so much BS We are in weather 5-30 degrees and have had to seal up our NEW unit otherwise heater wouldn't keep up Door frame seal is a joke, windows gave large gaps in weatherstripping , in some cases (2) gaps 1" wide open to the outside in every window
I'm totally unhappy with their slip shod workmanship , cheap materials, and p- - - poor assembly
I know this is going to bring out the "Montana lovers" and I'll hear stuff like " you must need to adjust...." but really List price of $80 k ( thank god I didn't pay that) and brand new and have this and similar issues
All season means "All season" in Florida
Mark me as a very unhappy owner and fed up waiting for 2 months for my dealer to fix stuff that with care at the factory should have never happened
Oh and by the way , if they actually constructed these units with pride, workmanship and quality, you wouldn't need a dealer to fix their poor workmanship

It's gotta be your water line from the tank unless your tank heater isn't working.
Check to see if the water line is disconnected at the water station.
If ice forms in the water line, it expands and then pushes the connection off the valve (if your's is set up like mine).
