" What Year Is it ? What Model Is It? "

I called Keystone the other day and asked them a question about a second A/C. I gave them my vin # and they informed me that our camper was a 2001 model. We were told by the dealer that sold it to us that it was built in 2001 and that is what the title showed but it was a 2002 model. They were not a Montana dealer but had it from a trade in. I’ve always accepted the fact that it may have just been built early before the model year as some seemed to have been. When I ordered the replacement graphics I had to order them based on a 2001 model. That is what year matched our graphics on Burlington's site. I really don’t feel that we got ripped off because we seen what we were getting and we liked it. We chose this one over a newer one and one that was also less expensive of some other brand. This one is the one that felt right for us and I could tell it was well built. It has served us well thus far and I plan on getting a lot more service out of it.

I don’t remember ever seeing this discussed before so I’m a little curious about it. Has anyone else run into this?

I know some of you have purchased your Montana’s late in one year and it was the next year’s model #. If so, does your title show it for the model year or the year it was built in?

So, what year is our Montana?
It looks to me like I may need to correct the year in our signature!

Thanks!

Bill,
My rig was built in either Oct. or Nov. of 2001 but is classified as a 2002. When we ordered graphics that is the year we were given. Interesting issue. Good luck, Dennis

On mine there is a specification tag on the drivers side up by the nose that shows the build date. My build date was the second half of the model year and has the different aerodynamic nose piece with the hookup mirror. Some some of the 2006 models have the old type front cap and some have the newer cap along with the brown color scheme.

When we bought our first Montana it had just been delivered to the dealer. It was built in May 2001 and was titled a 2001. Two weeks later we were at the dealer and they had just received the new 2002's. The one we bought had all the changes of the 2002 but was built before the cutoff date which is sometime in May I believe.
It looked like a 2002, pulled like a 2002 and had everything the 2002 had except a 2 on the title and when I ordered the front graphic I ordered 2001.
When I got the Big Sky and sold the 2001 I received just as much for it as I would have received for the 2002 so I was happy and the new owner was also. So what is in a number?

Bill -

What year was on the title? That would be the thing to go by, I would think.

The title says 2001 under the year. I’m sure all the numbers of the title tell a story concerning the manufacture of the units. We learned this with the tires and the manufacture dates. Is anyone familiar on how to decipher the numbers on a title?

Bill...check the 10th digit in the VIN number...that indicates the year...Model year encoding
One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, which is required worldwide to encode the model year of the vehicle. Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. Note that the year code is the model year for the vehicle.
The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as "A" (since the 17-digit VIN wasn't mandatory until 1981, and the "A" or zero was in the manufacturer's pre-1981 placement in the VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that "Y" represents the year 2000. 2001 to 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 to 9, and subsequent years are encoded as "A", "B", "C", etc.
Code Year Code Year Code Year Code Year
A = 1980 L = 1990 Y = 2000 A = 2010
B = 1981 M = 1991 1 = 2001 B = 2011
C = 1982 N = 1992 2 = 2002 C = 2012
D = 1983 P = 1993 3 = 2003 D = 2013
E = 1984 R = 1994 4 = 2004 E = 2014
F = 1985 S = 1995 5 = 2005 F = 2015
G = 1986 T = 1996 6 = 2006 G = 2016
H = 1987 V = 1997 7 = 2007 H = 2017
J = 1988 W = 1998 8 = 2008 J = 2018
K = 1989 X = 1999 9 = 2009 K = 2019

Hello Bill N Donna,

I have a 2005 Monty (built on 2004, the DMV title reads that it is registered as a 2005. I likewise went into the Burlington site and noted that the graphics for my 2005 resemble the 2004 model year. I will now need to decide whether I like the 2004 or 2005 grahics better. Just like rames metioned: what really matters is the year that is on the DMV registration right? I tend to believe that rv manufacturers sometimes need to use up prior years inventory. No worries on my Monty

Build date on mine was April 2006, picked up from dealer June 2006, but tag on side of camper and also title list it as a 2007. Go figure.
