Recommended campground around Cody Wyoming

Going up to Yellowstone and wanted to get your thoughts on where to camp. Plan to enter Yellowstone at the east entrance. Thanks

Absaroka Bay RV Park. Not the best, not the worst. Convenient to everything in Cody. While in Cody, take in the rodeo. There is a trolley tour of Cody. Personally not worth the money. A lot of criss-crossing the town. You can find everything very easily yourself. Nice Chinese buffet in town. Expect traffic in Yellowstone, especially if bears or elk are sighted just off the road. Get to Old Faithful 15 - 20 minutes before she "blows" to get a seat.

It has been years but stayed at KOA Cody. It was close to everything. Go to the Museum but plan for a few hours.

Be sure to see the Museum in Cody. 2 of my friends who live in Wyoming one in Dubois one in Laramie told me I had to see the Cody Museum so I went just to satisfy them. I thought I would spend 15 minuets in the Museum. I spend 2 days. I’ve been back 5 times. It’s a must see.

I stayed at the Parkway RV Park. it is very close to the Walmart and not far from downtown. The KOA is a couple of miles out of town and reviews of Ponderosa say the sewer is at the back about 20-25 feet from Monty hookup. Parkway has FHU and wifi. IT seems like all parks have something wrong with them, so I went for the cheapest bad place - ha ha!!! No credit cards tho.

Cody Trout Ranch was a quiet place, easy to get in and out of, and had great views over the river. A couple horses in the nearby field were friendly, too!

Since it is a trout farm, you can fish there without a license and bring em back for dinner.

A short drive from there into Cody. Would def. stay there again.

We stayed at the Ponderosa last summer it was right in town. Was very nice, they do only take cash or a personal check. Its close to Buffalo Bill Museum, could walk if you like. I would stay there again. Like twindman sad the sewer hookup was back so you would need an extension hose to reach.

I’ve always stay at the ponderosa. It’s in walking distance of the museum with a very nice restaurant between the camp and the museum.

I don't recommend the KOA during the peak months, it was probably one of if not the worst KOA we've ever stayed out. Noise, partying and hell raising going on until the wee hours of the morning. Pool area had a frat house atmosphere, not our cup of tea. Definitely won't stay there again.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar in Hill City and loved it. It is a really large RV park with full hook ups and cabins. We stayed there over the 4th of July several years ago.

I just made reservations at the Buffalo Bill State Park which is about 9 miles out of town to the west. I hope they can accommodate a 37' rig (they say only 25')! Has anyone every stayed there? Would love some input.

With a lot of State Parks you are pushing your luck with anything longer than around 30ft.
Just my two cents

I’ve stayed in the Buffalo Bill State park twice. I enjoyed my first stay. The second one the wind was so bad my brother and I were afraid to stay. We were afraid our 5er might be blown in the lake. If the wind isn’t blowing you will be fine, without much company. The wind can be howling on one side of the mountain and hardly blowing on the other. A friend told me the exact days the wind blows in Wyoming. It starts on January 1 and ends on December 31. That’s not far from the truth. I would say if the wind isn’t too bad, it’s an nice park go for it especially if you like to camp without a lot of neighbors like me.

I would look into other options. You may get there and find you have no place to stay as 12' is quite a difference.

As well as I remember you will have plenty of room in the state park. There will be dozens of sites to choose from. Enjoy your stay.

Several have already mentioned it, but I have stayed at the Cody KOA a couple of times. They have a nice park right outside of town. The staff was friendly and everything was clean. We like it and probably wouldn't stay anywhere else just because we know that is a nice place.

It only takes about 10 minutes to get from there to the rodeo which is on the complete opposite side of town.

Have fun!

Well just wanted to give everyone an update. We are staying at Absaroka Bay. It is a really nice campground. Plenty of room between sites. Small patch of grass on either side. Just saw a couple of mule deer this evening. I would certainly recommend this place. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Thanks for the update. We arrive there on 6/22 for a week stay.

I second the Cody Trout Ranch, nothing fancy, but out of town and quiet. The campsites were clean and the people taking care of the campground were absolutely some of the best host we've run across. The only downside it is newer and has a lack of shade. We have also stayed in the KOA in Cody several times including this year and it is your typical KOA, staff was friendly but it has lots of traffic and spaces are cramped, we parked our truck out in an overflow area so it would not get door dinged by our neighbor. Don't miss the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, back way into the NorthEast entrance/Cooke City. We saw 90% of our wildlife in this way and Lamar Valley.
