Generator Exhaust

I have a new 2018 Montana 3731FL and purchased with out a generator. We don’t usually boondock but considering buying a Champion 3500 dual fuel remote inverter generator for when traveling and stopping at nights. My concern is venting the exhaust when mounted in the front compartment meant for a generator.
Anyone familiar with the setups and pros and cons?

IF I was to use a portable generator setup,I would NOT use it in the front generator compartment. I would find a way to secure it outside, attached to the coach or tow vehicle.

I would recommend against mounting it internal. Unless you have the correct mounting set up, you will have a fair amount of noise and vibration. If you want to go internal, bite the bullet for an OEM setup.

You could mount a portable genny in the back of your truck or set it out. Your Champion 3500 will run 1 a/c.

We added 4 6 volt golf cart batteries, a 3000 watt inverter and 550 watts of solar. We also have 2 2000 watt Honda generators that will allow us to run 1 a/c or recharge our battery bank if we have a lot of cloud cover.

yes. mount your non factory gen outside.

even in a shortbed truck it can be bolted down ( honda eu3000). so no way will it walk away.
or bolted to a rear rack. that is also secured very well to your coach.
just rig up a way to hold two metal gas can on the rack. one each side of the gen ( blance thing). and a truck grade tarp to cover in bad weather or while in transit.
belife of not seen, can not "walk away".

I'll join the group that feel you should only put a generator in that compartment that was meant to go there. Exhaust, heat transfer, engine cooling and electrical issues are all a part of the consideration.

Ditto. Only issue is unhooking and pulling forward about ten feet to get the exhaust away from the front of your 5er. A Wallymart 30 amp extension cord works fine.

Portable gender, always outside, never in. Also, try to locate it so exhaust blows away from your unit.

I posted installing a Honda 6500 on slide out bars utilizing the gen prep transfer switch but removing the aluminum box. The post was under Additions and Improvements and Honda 6500 installation. It was posted 12/13/2013 and had pics of the whole thing. I am still using the setup and it works out great for me...and no exhaust problems. At least gives you an idea of other installation possibilities.

I use a Honda 2000 in the front compartment on a slide out tray (mor ride ) welded a nipple on the exhaust with a 90 ELL A length of heater hose to a length of conduit to exhaust fumes out left side of trailer under the front When done with gen. Disconnect heater hose and push gen. Into compartment.

I looked back and saw the photos of your install.
Nice job and gives me something to think about.
Thanks.

Our 3121RL has a rear receiver hitch. I utilized a hitch haul platform that inserts in the receiver hitch. We welded a rail system that keeps two 3500 watt generators secure on the platform and also has a locking bar across the top that prevents anyone from removing the generators. It allows for easy plug in and servicing while keeping the generators far enough away from the bedroom. You can't even hear them running in the bedroom or in the living area if the air is running.

In the truck forums they say you did not do it unless you post a pic. Here we just ask nicely if you please post a pic. Thanks

Generator

We have a similar generator mounted on an aluminum cargo carrier on the back of our Monty.
Drilled holes in the generator cage and bolted it down.
I bought a champion fabric cover for it. They only last about a year. I built an exterior snug fitting plywood flat "top" that fits over the top of the generator that can be put over it when needed so I can run it in the rain when we are stopped.
We can park virtually anywhere with this setup.
You can't hear the generator when inside when the windows are closed. No exhaust gets inside either.
But, we have 3 monoxide detectors inside too.
Maybe overkill, but we can sleep well.
