Toilet seal and ...
How does everyone flush their toilet (Sealand)? Do you let it slap back (thus causing water to spray up to the bottom of the lid, or do you gently let it close?
The reason for my asking is that I have had the seal replaced, but after awhile (couple of weeks or so), the seal starts to let water seep past it. I use the gentle way.
I have cleaned the seal using the "specialized" tool, the "specialized" cleaner and the old fashioned way by getting down and dirty and cleaning the rubber ring with an old sponge.
Sorry for such a dumb question, but I am getting frustrated. I don't think one should have to let the pedal snap back up. If there is a different brand of china toilet one can recommend, please do so.
Thanks,

No dumb question. I'd let it "snap" back a couple times and it'll probably quit leaking. But that "stuff" we put in there can sometimes be gooey and almost glue-like (if such a word). I've found that I have to let it snap back periodically. Seems to do the trick.

As has been mentioned several times here on the forum we have found that this problem is usually caused by a small particle stuck on the rubber seal or a dried out seal. We had this problem when we first bought our unit. We turned off all water to the unit, cleaned the seal thoroughly, dried, and then coated the seal with petroleum jelly (vaseline). It has now been a year and we have had no repeated problem. If your unit sets for a long period of time (could even be on the lot prior to delivery) the seal seems to dry out and the vaseline will lubricate the seal and put it back in working condition. This was even discussed with the manufacturer at one of the seminars at the MOC rally.

What about using silicone spray? Would that be safer to use on rubber/plastic than Vaseline I wonder??? I have read where it is recommended for several things on RVs as opposed to other types of lubricants that may cause damage.

With most types of O-rings used in industry we use a silicone grease when we install new O-rings so when I do some maintenace on the toilet , that is what I will use. So far, our toilet has worked fine with just releasing the pedal slowly. It has never leaked and our unit is almost a year old . So far not one warranty problem. Touch Wood.

When did you have the seals replaced? I read a thread on here that if you call Sealand, they know of the common problem and will send replacement seals that are supposed to fix the issue. I called and they sent two seals no questions asked.

Joyce,
I added the vaseline to the seal today. So, we'll see if it works.
Doug,
I got the new seal from Sealand in March '06.
Thanks for the replies,

Wrenchtraveller,
Where can one find silicone grease? Sil spray is an easy find, but the grease(s) I can't fine.
Thanx.

We use a product called Bell Ray and it comes in a small tube. Silicone grease looks like vaseline and it is an industrial product that is supplied to us so I just have a tube in my tool box.
It is fairly expensive and things like mechanical seals will come with a tiny disposable tube with a small amount to do the 0-rings.
Probably vaseline would do just fine on the toilet seals.

The manual for the toilet...yes there is one, says to let it 'snap' back 'which permits proper sealing.'

I've got a partial tube of "Dow-Corning Stop Cock Grease" that I've had for years, works well on rubber stuff.
Fjkiss,
But I was more or less just courious of an 'all purpose' silly grease. Xerox copy machines, when new, came with a bottle of silly oil. That stuff was beyond slippery.
Thanx again!

I had the same problem of water leaking through the seal. I got a new seal from the distributor, but before replacing it I tried putting Vaseline on the rubber part of the gasket, that seemed to help, but after several days of not using the toilet, the water still leaked and the bowl was dry. I then scrubbed the gasket with a denture brush....solved the problem completely, still have the unused replacement seal.
So, every once-in-a-while, I get the old denture brush out, scrub the toilet seal gasket....and give it a little lube with vaseline....a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it!
