Birmingham Area

We will be traveling from Indy to Destin Florida the last week in May and we would like to stop in the Birmingham area to overnite. Don't need full hookups or anything, electric would be just fine. Oak Mtn State Park said they required a 2 night minimum - and Birmingham South seemed a bit pricy. So - any suggestions from the "been there done than" gang?
By the way any MOC's going to be at TopSail May 22-31?

We have stayed several times at the Tannehill Iron Works State Park which is not far southwest of Birmingham. It is a very nice rural park away from interstate noise and urban sprawl. We would gladly stay there again. It would be our first choice in the Birmingham area.

Edit to say: I see that this is pretty far off your route. I must remember that we travel I-20 East/West and have never come through Birmingham South/North. Still, this is the only recommendation I can make on personal experience.

Birmingham South in Pelham received Woodall's highest rating. I believe it is close to I-65, south of B'ham in Pelham. We have not stayed there but the rating is impressive.

Oak Mt. is not considered a great place to stay. Tannehill is more desirable and I've heard great reports about it but it is 20+ miles west of B'ham. If you want to follow State Hwy 231 you can stay at one of the nicest, and largest, state parks in Alabama....Wind Creek State Park. Almost every site is on or near the shoreline of Lake Martin and there are 600 more or less sites there. We live only 35 miles from it and all the locals camp there to be on the lake.
