Bed Saver

Are "Bed Saver" and "Blue Ox" the same company or competitors? If they're not the same company which one is prefered by MOC members?

Blue Ox is the company. Bedsaver is the product. At least that's my understanding. Our bedsaver was waiting at our rig last night when we arrived home here in Victoria Palms. Glen spent about 30 mins putting it on the hitch. Now we have to find a torque wrench to tighten it up. We feel a lot safer.

Thanks. Where did you purchase from and if I may ask how much was it?

Glen bought our Bedsaver from Rvupgrades.com, total bill was just over $168.00, delivered to south Texas. The price may vary according to the model you order as they are specific to each hitch.

That is a WAY better price 164.77 AND they are located in Eastlake, Ohio which is less than 30 miles from my driveway. Thanks much....

Just ordered the bedsaver from Rv upgrades for 164.77 and saved 41.00 over two other suppliers. They are about 1/2 hour from our driveway so thanks again.

richfaa.... thanks for posting the link (www.towingworld.com). Even though we had heard about "bedsavers", we never checked into them and didn't know what they were until we went to the website and looked around. They have a nice short video showing one in action. "Bedsaver" looks like something the well-dressed tow vehicle should be wearing.

Rich, I'm glad you got the better price. This forum has saved us a few $$ on different occasions.

Just finished installing the “Bed Saver”. I did have one problem. It seems “Blue Ox” just bought the “Bed Saver” line. They changed the specs to include “Ny-lock” nuts instead of the original nut and lock washer. The problem is the new bolts have an unthreaded shoulder that on my hitch (Reese 20K) extended out past the metal side plates making it impossible to torque down the nuts. I had to use the old lock washers to take up the space. I called “Blue Ox” and advised them of the situation so they may change the bolts or provide a washer in future kits. Other than that it went on pretty easy. Glad I was at home and had my air tools.

Sweetfire, our bedsaver worked great on our Huskie hitch, just for your information. Everything fit just fine.

Judy, If I had used the old lock washer and nut (like the instructions first said) I would have been OK. The problem for me was later on in the instructions it said to use the nylock nuts provided. Oh well, so much for reading the instructions.

Judy - We will be down the 12th in the Valley, have a sears torque wrench with me you will be welcome to use. 65 foot pounds is what is recommended.

Thanks for the offer, John. It sure feels good to know that we'll have this extra protection on the hitch.

There was a question about having to raise the RV so the pin would clear the Bed Saver and then having to lower the RV so the Pin Would engage the hitch. I had some time this morning so I went out and tested mine.

First, as my signature line indicates, I have a Reese 20K hitch.

The Bed Saver was installed per the manufacturer's instructions. As indicated above I had a small problem with the nuts and bolts that were provided but by using the old lock washers the problem was alleviated.

The Bed Saver was allowed to sag as much as the boltholes would allow before the nuts and bolts were torqued down.

I like the hitch in the truck to be about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch higher than the pin box on the trailer so that as I back up the pin box slightly climbs into the hitch. With that in mind the pin still clears the Bed Saver by about 1/2 inch. With all of the hitch weight in the Bed Saver I still have enough room to place the widest part of my fist between the top of the bed rail and the trailer at the closest point.

There was about 3/4 to 1 inch of vertical play at the far end of the Bed Saver before I tightened down the bolts. If you have to raise then lower your RV to hook up maybe you tightened the bolts with the Bed Saver pulled up as far as it would go. Loosening the bolts, allowing the Bed Saver to shift down and retightening (65 ft. lbs.) may give you enough room to clear the Bed Saver when hooking up. But when you're finished check your clearences by slowly lowering the pin into the Bed Saver to make sure you clear the bed side rails. Hope this helped.

I probably forgot one important fact to this scenario. We have the TrailAir hitch which makes the kingpin lower than in our OEM hitch on the Montana. Oops, Glen said that is not true, that if we're very exact, we can slide over the Bedsaver and into the hitch. We just don't hitch up so exactly. If you're on a perfectly flat surface, it might work but often the truck goes up or down before the hitch passes over the Bedsaver. So we allow more clearance.

our bedsaver is just laying in the back of the truck. We do not have the 3400 yet and we are having the Mor-Ryde pin box installed by the dealer. He said they will do all the alignment upon delivery. I have taken note of all that has been said here so I should be ahead of the game.

Actually where I park the RV is on a slight grade so the Bed Saver is probably higher as it approaches the pin than it would be on level ground.
