Anatomy of a 5er hitch

I took mine all apart...hope I can figure how to get it back together! Winters on South Padre Rust Island took it's toll on the hitch. Can't stand rust. Guy said $110 an hr to sandblast it, figured it would take 30-40 minutes. I will give it a good coat of Rustolium black paint or two, should look real nice.
It's an air ride, with two Firestone airbags and a slider type.

I don't think mine looks any better than that and it's never smelled the ocean. Guess I better get to work.

Dick, you are a fairly normal guy.. Don't follow my lead, my obsessive compulsive behavior dictates my actions. It would probably be fine and outlive me. But, I am doing it.

Ozz, the small hand held sandblaster for about 30 bucks will handle that project great. And if your are going to rattle can it, try Hammer finish, really is a tough paint. And if I know Ozz, by the time he is done with it, a mod here and a mod there, heck the 5ver will probably load itself. Have fun on your project. Just finished one of my own. Saturday I was going to sell my Honda XR650L, bought it new in 2006, alot of mods on it, never missed a beat in 6 yrs, Saturday, high rpm miss. Got it sorted out tonight. Bike, Corvette, Escape, House, and we are out of here and on the road.

John,
I bought that one from Harbor Freight, you can see the marks on the far-left piece. I used 2 different types of blast media, just wouldn't work well, I had 100# air pressure, the gun instructions said max 90#. If it would have worked, it would have taken FOREVER to blast all the hitch. for $110 or less it is a bargain. My time is limited, I have so much to do in 1 month, 11 days, 4 hrs and 3 minutes...
I'm helping install a big A/C unit this morning, then have a rooftop unit to work on, promised Sue some range time this afternoon.
We got the big rear-window blinds restrung and the half-time oven re-installed yesterday.
Sounds like you are working your plan also. You are in Roswell?
Come over to Tonopah and see us, 90 miles from the 'Q'.
Glad you got the Bike fixed. Good luck with selling everything, there is a buyer out there somewhere...

I did my draw tight hitch also Ozz. Tore it all apart, used a angle grinder with wire brush and got most of the rust then went to sandpaper. Add some primer, and rustoleum paint and it looks like brand new. Problem is that after doing all that I decided to buy a new one due to the fact that the old hitch didn't have any side swivel in it. Didn't like that so I bought a Curt hitch. Seems to be a good hitch and have had no problems since the original head of the Curt didn't work right and Curt stepped up and replaced it at no charge.

BTW the Draw Tight I have is a 25K hitch and is for sale. Not likely a sale here as its what it is and not thinking anybody would want the one without the tilt side to side. To much pressure on that pin IMHO.

Ozz, yep Roswell, NM, believe it or not I spent alot of time over there, my father-in-law was one of the original contractors on the Palo Verde Nuc Plant. I was born and raise in Ajo. Spent alot of years in Morenci, Safford, Duncan area. I will be in the area off and on, may just take you up on a visit. We were heading to S San Padre Island last year in November when my dad passed away and we had to change course. I may run into down at SPI this winter if you head that way again. Cheers.
