TWO propane regulators - huh!?

Last fall on our last trip I had what I thought was an auto changeover regulator failure. I switched bottles to the roadside and went back to heat and stove use then bought a new auto regulator to install this spring. Today I wandered out to see if I should also install a new hose as well (yes) but also found that I have a second, single stage regulator of some sort on the curbside bottle line. It's located on the black iron pipe cross over to the other bottle, hoses and auto changeover regulator. This is far from my first 5er or TT with two propane bottles. Without pulling that regulator out of its almost hidden location can't figure out what it really does. Anyone else have this and if so, have a clue? I'll order a new one with that new hose but.......

It is a 30 psi regulator required by regulations when propane tanks are separated by XX feet.

An earlier discussion about that regulator.

http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...egulator+valve

And many of us have had to replace that regulator due to leaking.

Thanks for the info. Learn something new every day -- thankfully

OK, I understand but it really makes no sense. If it's 59 inches long without this low pressure regulator or 61 inches long with regulator, the same potential for a problem exists regardless of that dimension. Oh well some committee had to do something

It sounds like I have 2 choices - remove it entirely or better yet, find a replacement. Since I'll be replacing it, is there a manufacturer and part number? Marshall-Excelsior have several with the MEGR-230 or MEGR-230-9 being a couple that I've found that may work.

Looks like no one recalls what replacement they used, so I'll grab a couple tools and look then report back for others future reference

I did use a Marshall 30 psi regulator when I replaced mine. But that was a number of years ago and I don't remember the model number.

As far as the length specified by NFPA, I know from my experience on the committees (not that particular committee) that they try not to leave anything to interpretation. They could have said "a length appropriate to not allow any significant accumulation of condensed propane in the line" and everyone could say "Oh that would be about 30 ft". So they chose what they consider the limits they are willing to put in writing and feel it is a safe measure.

According to previous history and experience here, the regulator is
part # C6121#2049 30psi From Marshall controls. There used to be numerous sources but the original posting of information is from 2009. I have no idea if Montana still uses this regulator or they have found a cheaper alternative.

I noticed the Marshall 230 is a low pressure regulator. It shows a green color on Marshall web site. I believe the OEM regulators are high pressure regulators. I know the originals were typically red. I think you need the 6121 that Carl noted above. They both show a max inlet pressure of 250 psi, so I have no idea what the difference is.

It warmed up enough so I could get the existing regulator off. It's a brand I have never heard of - a Fairview GB-630. This one is marginal with 100psig inlet pressure and 500K Btu outlet @30psig

I looked at the Marshall MEGR-6121-30 but that one may be the Rolls Royce of 30 psig regulators but only has an inlet pressure of 100psig. I also looked at the Marshall MEGR-130-30 which seems to be a better one for RV use with inlet pressure of 250psig ( https://www.marshallexcelsior.com/st...pressure-fixed ) and a million Btu output.

I'll be ordering this one, Marshall MEGR-130-30 along with a new 20" pigtail

BB & Carl, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction (and Carl, the 6121 may no longer be available)

Just FYI. The tape for propane connections is different than regular pipe tape (I learned). Don't know if all brands are this way, but my dispenser is yellow as opposed to ??? white?

Tom, I have a roll or two of the yellow gas connection tape but prefer to use a gas system approved liquid pipe dope (and what Keystone used). My luck with Teflontape is worse then lousy

I thought AMAZON Prime was fast. RV Upgrades made them look like snails. I ordered the regulator and 20" replacement hose on Tuesday evening, they shipped on Wednesday and arrived Thursday. Unfortunately 8" of soggy snow yesterday after two 60* plus days changed my installation plans though

We asked the question to Marshall regulators back when we got the 06 3400. The response was that it is required and needed they did suggest a higher rated regulator and we did replace the OEM one. We have not had a problem of any kind.

When traveling in Oregon I went to an R.V. parts store and picked one up from the shelf. My problem was the Change Over Regulator so I now have a spare. Id give it to you but the drive may be a bit much, I am in N. Calif.

Good Luck.

Got a wee break in the weather yesterday and installed both new propane regulators. Also had a lesson learned. I found that there are at least a couple different types of hose connections at the regulators. One is the usual NPT. the other is an inverted flare - which of course is the one I bought (the other side was new last fall). I rooted around in my fittings box of odd parts and found the right adapter so all is well. Did my soapy water leak test, fired up the furnace for a check and am now ready for the camping season as far as LPG service.

Just as a note, our 2018 3791RD has a Fairview GR-630. It's red and has no pressure numbers marked on it. Their web pages says
GR-630B1/4 FPT, 500,000 BTU/Hr, 30 PSIG Set Outlet but no inlet pressure.

Good information for those who are looking for replacements

Both the primary and secondary regulators on our 5er were Fairview and both had a Made in China sticker. Both replacements are now Marsh-Excelsior now.
