I have traveled both in the last year from about Lodi south and to me it is a toss up. I-5 through Stockton is a little rough for a few miles but the rest is OK. So IMHO, just toss a coin unless you have a preference. One other thing, I only go as far south as Bakersfield and then west on 58.
