Engine / Tranny Question

On our way east from lake Raystown Pa yesterday I decided to follow a route the gps chose which included countless miles of 8 and 9 percent uphill grades. Some may have been more.
We have a 08 F350, 6.4 automatic.
About half way up the first long grade I noticed a change in the sound of the engine / transmission. At first I thought it was a fan running but then it almost acted like the transmission or torque converter was slipping. When I stepped on the accelerator the noise would change in intensity but the tach was steady. One time I decided to just put the accelerator to the floor and the noise went away??
I never felt any shuttering from the tranny and managed to pull all the grades.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
