Noisy Lippert level up system fix

Copied this from RV net

Lippert has finally offered a user fix for temperature related popping in their hydraulic four point and six point auto leveling systems used on many fifth wheel trailers. They determined the noise was caused by high stiction (static friction) in the hydraulic cylinders. Changing out a quart of hydraulic fluid for a quart of Torco RFF 15 ( 15 weight racing fork fluid) significantly reduces stiction and thereby greatly reduces the popping and jolting that many rv owners have felt. There is a recommended procedure to follow, and 10 wt fluid may also be used in cooler climates.

This has been discussed previously Rich and Lippert also has a Lip Sheet out to further assist.

I was reading the steps in the process and came to this one:

Obtain a fluid extraction device (siphon, turkey baster, etc.).

I have to admit, I burst out loud laughing. I have never heard a turkey baster referred to as 'fluid extraction device'.

I did that mode some time ago as a neighbor at home races dirt bikes and uses that stuff. I have still heard a pop or two.

The Lippert information also lists CAT Hyraulic Fluid Additive as one of the fluids that can be used...and...that is the one that I will be using as soon as I get time to go to the Catipillar dealer in Ft Myers. John

Send a message via ICQ to Bruce Lenhardt
I added the Cat antistiction oil and it has completely stopped the popping.

Yes, the popping seems to have slowed down and possibly may have stopped. I have wondered if over time as the LevelUp is used and the ram seals becomes more seated/worn if the static friction will be relieved more gradually verses the sudden popping noise.

Guess I will have to check at work to see if maintenance has the Caterpillar Hydraulic Fluid Additive. May have to have some on hand just in case. How much has to be swapped out with the hydraulic fluid, does any one know?

Had the popping the first few times out.

After that all gone. Didn't put any extra fluid in.

The suggested method is to remove a quart of fluid and replace it with a quart of one of the suggested fluids. And, if you still have noise, remove one more quart and add a second quart of the fluid. I chose to use the CAT fluid, just because there was a Caterpillar dealer not far from us when in Idaho. I didn't choke too much when told the price was $25 or so for a quart bottle of the stuff. Must have some precious metals in it. At least it solved the problem.
