Honda Generator question

Hi All, Considering buying a inverter generator. In the past I had a EU2000i Honda. When we bought the pusher we sold it. Now with the 5th considering a gen set again.

Back when we had the Honda, early 2000, Honda was the only game in town, now there are others. Or do I stick to what works?

The 2000 would sit and idle all night with the TV on and a few lights. Would burn about .1 gal per hour only speeding up when the hair dryer or Micro wave came on or coffee pot in the morning.

Considering a EU3000iS this time around, it is heavy, would be mounted on a cargo carrier in the 2" receiver hitch on the back of the Montie and in some sort of enclosure to "hide" it. It would use almost twice the fuel, but if loaded with a hair dryer the question does it still idle or go to WOT like the EU2000i did? At idle it will consume about .17 gal per hour.

The 3000 has twice the engine size, weighs 3 times as much but is only 50% more power output.

I can buy 2x2000 or 1x3000 for the same money. Thoughts guy's?

Jim

If I was in the market it would be 2x 2000. Just my opinion.

I have two 2000I's I almost never use, but the ability to split them up and provide power to some job I'm doing away from the rig is very handy and since we went solar what they are used for the most. Don't have to lug a heavy generator, but can power everything from a table saw to an electric chain saw with no problem. I looked at the 3000i in some kind of a mount like you propose even before we went solar, but then I looked at how I used them and decided to stay with mobility and convenience.

We have one 2000i now and down the road as the need arises we will add a second. There is just no way at this time in my life I feel the need to wrestle something heavy and cumbersome like a 3000 of any brand.

As Dick said the portability of the one 2000i in any park or when around home adds to the reasoning IMHO.

I have the 3000 IS. It's quieter than 1 of the 2000 according to Honda and there is less chance of it growing legs in the middle of the night.

We have two Honda 2000's, sitting in the bed of the truck in a welded steel cage with 1" bars through the handles. The extended run fuel tank sits between them under where the hitch pin enters the hitch. When I am not towing, the locking tonneau cover and locking tail gate add additional protection. When it is time to run the generator, I put the tailgate down and the recoil starter is at chest level, making it very easy to start. I see lots of Yamaha's also these days, but I still think the Honda has a better form factor (shorter, squattier). Lots of good solutions out there, choose what's right for you.

Ron, you got a picture of your setup. Did you fab up the cages or use something ready made?

Thanks Jim

Jim I think you have a LB truck, same year as mine. I have posted this picture before and this is what I did to accommodate my Honda 3000. I designed it and had a shop cut and weld it together. The only thing I would do differently would be have the generator compartment about 1" wider. I just have to lift the lid, the front folds down and it can run in there forever just required rotating the exhaust grill 180 degrees so it blows straight up. Mine has what they call a cold weather package or something like that. Perhaps something to consider as it is always with you and inside the tool compartment I carry a 120V 130psi air compressor which runs off the generator.

Thanks Ed. My 60 gal fuel tank is where your box is. But that is one sweet set up.

Jim, if you send me your email, I can send you a picture. We fabricated it ourselves based on George Person's setup. I bought the extended run tank from Wise.

We have the eu3000is for power outages at the stick built. We mounted it on the deck of the c5500 and bolted it down (so it won't get legs). If I was setting up the unit only for an RV I would go with the 2 eu2000is only for the lower weight. Most of the time one unit will do the job. The 2 eus can be kept in a DP tool box.

two 2000's 99% your only going to use 1 and when you do you will really like moving a 2000 instead of the heavy 3000. My son has the 2 2000's I have a Yamaha 1000 love it. And I have a off brand 4000. Last year Shelley and I Dry camped around two months used the yamaha, and once in a while one of the hondas. I think theres not much in your rig that will need A 3000 but there are posibly a thing or two that would need the two 2000's wired together.

A Honda 2000 watt makes more noise than a 3000 watt. Put 2 together and they get pretty noisy. I have an Onan 4000 and its junk compared to the Honda.
