Very interesting factoids Overlord. No problem with the holes, good sharp bits - boom - we are in. I did not think this was a carbon impregnated steel - I guess it is. It drilled like solid steel. Nor did I appreciate any rubber backing on the other side. I appreciate your intricate knowledge.

Further speaking in "practical terms" you have good info as to major machining processes. We're only talking about a couple of @1/8" holes and believe me, our pin boxes drill and tap easily. As for drilling into the rubber snubber inside a MorRyde pin box … it's just a rectangular chunk of rubber bolted inside the cavity similar to motor mount material. If you did drill it with a bit the size we are talking … I doubt if it would of issue. Mtlakejim had a good observation … several of us have screwed or bolted on one of those big Accu Level levels at some point in RV ownership without looking back. I think we're close to stacking up way too many brain cells on this topic.

LOL - seriously - that is good. But if we dont exercise those brain cells once in a while - well, you know what happens. It was a fun discussion.

Mine is on the pin box also. Easy drilling and used self tapping screws. Me thinks DW is over thinking this. That said my wife was concerned about the same thing????

Yeah ...the DW...I rarely win , but sometimes it is a gizzard-cleaner to have a discussion ...on the flag set-up I ditto you should be good with location.

I just bought the suction cup flag holder. Stuck it to the cap and flying 3 small size US Coast Guard, Pirate and the American flags.

Saved any discussion with Hubby and I.

I haven't looked at my hitch but looks like at least some of them have two holes on top that would be ideal to drop a couple of bolts thru to hold a separately built bracket for the flag. I am thinking a piece of heavy strap cut to size and drilled to accommodate the flag staff holder would do the trick. Paint it with undercoating and it would look good too. Could even be used to hold one of those big levels. Go all SST hardware and maybe a bit of never seze so you can take it off and move it to the next camper.....

Seems a bit of overkill though if you ask me but at least it appeases those who are concerned about drilling additional holes in the hitch.........

I was thinking of drilling holes in the hitch too, but went 180 degrees in the other direction! :-) I bought a blank 1-1/4" tow hitch that does not have a hole in it for a ball, and drilled and taped 4 holes in it and mounted a pivoting flag pole holder on this flat plate, and then I can remove it simply by pulling out the hitch pin. This goes in the 1-1/4" trailer hitch on the back of the 5ver. See pic.

She's wrong, you're right, because you're a man and she's just a woman. (And that's how the fight started.) Seriously, I don't think the three small holes are of any concern, but I hope your persuasion skills are good.

I chose not to drill holes in the hitch for any reason. We still fly the flag.

These hitches are made of 1020 steel or something very similar. It’s not heat treated. It is a carbon steel as almost all steel is. Bottom line you are not going to hurt it no matter how fast you drill it or how hot you get it. They are welded. Think about how hot that gets the hitch. A few small holes will not cause any problem, hundreds probably wouldn’t hurt your hitch unless you put them as close as you could get them all the way around the hitch.

I would not even give this a second thought, but since there is concern to "properly" insure no issues you should chamfer the holes. this insures there are no sharp edges that might possibly start a crack. in all honesty that would also be a waste of time for those small holes, just want to add fuel to the fire.

No worries

Those warnings are equivalent to the warnings of hot coffee at McDonalds, and the warnings on the coffee pot carafe that say "do not hold over someone's head"...
They are there to protect the manufacturer from someone doing something stupid. Use common sense and your flag mount will be fine. I have had holes in 2 different pin boxes for more than 10 years with zero issues. Your 1/8" holes are not going to be a problem.

The one thing that comes to mind: if you ever have a wreck the mfg will claim you modified the hitch.....

Such is society today that everyone is trying to protect themselves from lawsuits

The manufacturer can claim all they want, but like warranty issues, the manufacturer is required to prove that your modifications were the cause, or contributed significantly to an accident. There is no way three or four 1/8" holes will have any effect whatsoever to the structural integrity of a pin box.

I agree but you know they will try to use the tactic
