IS Weight ADD

After finally grasping the impact of GVWR and buying a new unit with consideration for IS …

I'm going to have to check with MorRyde to find out if the "IS" adds or deletes weight to the 5er .

Anyone have a clue

I'd be willing to bet it does add weight, as the IS units sure look like they are heavier than the springs and axles that they replace.

It will add a few hundred pounds but the tradeoff in a much beefier suspension is worth it in my opinion.

We never thought about how much weight it would add and do not know. It was a safety issue.

Depending on the IS you get it could add 300-900 lbs (if you also level your trailer). Some will argue this is unsprung weight and does not affect your CCC, however scales cannot differentiate between sprung and unsprung weight... they simply read the entire weight so in theory the IS suspension will take away from your CCC since your GVWR has not changed. If you only RV with a light load out, this may not affect your plans, fully loaded out for fulltiming could be a different story especially if something "happens" and the authorities, your insurance company or the courts get involved. Caveat emptor and plan accordingly. JMHO.

One reason for getting IS is you get a true carrying capacity at each wheel carried separately from the other wheels, leaf springs "transmit" acceleration forces/loads to other wheels on the same axle. IS does not. Ride quality is much improved. The leaf spring axle rating is a bit of a misnomer, as axles can be overloaded on one side and not the other and still be under the total axle weight rating. This would be a valid reason for upping a standard leaf spring suspension of say 7k to an IS setup with 8k axles(4k at each wheel) to keep a potential overloaded 7k axle wheel position from being overloaded using a more capable IS rated arrangement. In theory you still cannot carry more than what is placarded on your rig or exceed your trailer GVWR.

Mor-ryde told me the 7k axle would add about 300#'s to the rv. The best ride will come from the 7k axle. Mor-Ryde will weigh your rv and tell you which axle they would recommend. I didn't go there with any pre conceived ideas but used there recommendation.

Just an FYI their scales have been non- operable for some time now. As far as ride goes to each his/her own.

That's not good. We have an install date in mid June. If our rig can not be weighed, how do they determine what to do. ? That is unacceptable and will cancel our install if that's the case.

Look up "CAT SCALES" - i did the weigh out at the rally - good thing there is they weigh each tire and not just per axle.

Look: www.rvsafety.com

Had mine done before the rally. They looked at sticker and asked did I know my weights.
Had a weigh ticket With me and they said I was border line for 8k
Left it to me to decide, went 8k and told if we felt the ride was too harsh to stop in sometime and they can change the rubber “ spring plates” .

CAT scales practically everywhere. Also you can reference Escapees site for the same per wheel weighing company. I think they even have a member discount.

They told us the same thing as well as the 7K is fine upto about 17500 GVW and the 8k will be fine down to 17500 GVW before the ride becomes too harsh.

Have you had your rig weighed? Ours will be loaded out eventually so the only numbers I can give MORryde will be our GVWR (at 16800 lbs) when we have it done in April since we won't be loaded out at that point. They told us the same thing... the 7k will ride better but if we are high on the road side of the rig ( two long slides with the pantry, range and countertop and res. fridge in one and the washer and dryer in the other along with the bed and bathroom sink means we could possibly go over 3500 lbs on the road side suspension and that a 8k suspension might be appropriate. If we go with the 7k option we're down to 2600 lbs of ccc to stay under GVWR. The 8K option will takes down to about 2100 lbs of ccc to stay under GVWR. Hard to imagine we can cut our gear, food, toys clothes etc down to only 1800 lbs with the 7k let alone the 1300 lbs with the 8k(excluding solar, batteries and the washer and dryer, all in those items weigh about 800 lbs)... but then we are newbies. MORryde and others have said to me that 8K will ride much firmer than 7k for our approximate all in weight. Decisions decision. One respected mentor to me has said get the 8k and not worry about the GVWR since the frame was designed to carry the CCC but the logic fails in my mind... if the GVWR is immutable

Has anybody out there had a wheel by wheel weighing of a 3810, 3811 or 3812 or 3813... both virtually identical in layout. some real world numbers would be really helpful.
